The Washington Nationals (33-32) will take their season-long search for momentum to Ohio as they face off against the Cleveland Indians (32-33) for an interleague series. The Indians are in second place in the AL Central, but recently suffered through an eight-game losing streak before taking two wins against the Texas Rangers this week. The Nationals also won their most recent two games, and have won four of their last five, so both teams are in a position to gain traction in the standings during this meeting. The Indians are 18-12 at home, but Gio Gonzalez, who will get the ball in the series opener, will attempt to take away their home field advantage with his impressive stats there. Gonzalez has a 0.68 ERA with 27 strikeouts and a 4-0 record in four starts at Progressive Field. The Nationals lost a series in Cleveland in 2010, putting their overall record against the Indians at 3-3, so they will be looking to attain their first road series win against the Indians in this faceoff. The Indians have a solid offense, with a .256/.323/.426 slash line, and are tied for fifth-most home runs in the majors (77). However their pitching is not nearly as strong, which could be an opportunity for the recently resurgent Nationals bats to break out. Cleveland has the fourth-worst ERA in baseball (4.42), with the third-most walks (236) and a .251 batting average against. Starting Strasburg Stephen Strasburg will make his first start since May 31, when he lasted only two innings against the Atlanta Braves due to a lat strain. With Strasburg back in the rotation, all five of the Nationals starting pitchers will be healthy for the first time since May 15. After a slightly rocky start to his season, Strasburg had begun to settle in before getting injured. In his last five starts, he had posted a 1.20 ERA with 29 strikeouts, lasting through the seventh inning or later three times. The Nationals will look for him to resume that level of dominance in his return, as their chase of the first-place Braves heats up with the summer. In The Zone Ian Desmond (SS) .404 AVG, .433 OBP, .579 SLG, 2 HR, 12 RBI (15-game hitting streak) Who’s Hot? Kipins (2B) .417 AVG, .481 OBP, .625 SLG, 1 HR, 3 SB (last six games) Santana (C) .273 AVG, .333 OBP, .455 SLG, 4 2B (last six games) Who’s Not? Mark Reynolds (3B) .174 AVG, .208 OBP, .174 SLG, 9 SO (last six games) Nick Swisher (1B) .125 AVG, .222 OBP, .125 SLG, 9 SO (last six games) Probable Starters 6/14, Gio Gonzalez (3-3, 3.59 ERA, .206 BAA, 74 SO) vs. Justin Masterson (8-5, 3.68 ERA, .223 BAA, 92 SO)  6/15, Jordan Zimmermann (9-3, 2.00 ERA, .205 BAA, 61 SO) vs. Scott Kazmir (3-4, 5.33 ERA, .299 BAA, 53 SO) 6/16, Stephen Strasburg (3-5, 2.54 ERA, .216 BAA, 73 SO) vs. Corey Kluber (4-4, 4.08 ERA, .265 BAA, 57 SO)

Tito: Chris Perez Likely To Pitch Sunday On Rehab Assignment

The Indians could soon have their closer back on the active roster. The Plain Dealer’s Jodie Valade was there as Tribe manager Terry Francona ran down the reports of currently injured players. “He did real well,” Francona said. “He didn’t command great, which I don’t think is a surprise because he hadn’t thrown off the mound much.” He added that Perez likely will...

Around the Farm: June 15, 2013

Danny Salazar (Columbus SP)- 5 IP, 2 R(ER), 8 K’s- Perhaps the most electric arm in the system posted a very solid start Saturday night. While limited to 88 pitches Salazar went deep enough to earn a win and show off his special stuff. Only four base runners in five innings and eight strikeouts is a very strong start. Who knows whether injuries will eventually force Salazar to...

Indians lose game; Swisher admits shoulder is problem

CLEVELAND -- Every loss is supposed to count as one, but some sure feel like they count a lot more.So it was Saturday night with the Indians, who saw an excellent comeback turn into a crushing 7-6 defeat to the Washington Nationals. It was so crushing that manager Terry Francona called what happened in the top of the ninth inning heartbreaking, a rare use of an emotional word by the...

Indians are happy to be home

The Cleveland Indians may be thrilled to return home. Justin Masterson may be the most relieved. Coming off a lackluster road trip, the Indians hope Masterson can continue his home dominance in Friday night's series opener with the Washington Nationals. Cleveland (32-33) opened a nine-game road trip by losing seven in a row before finding some solace in winning the last two,...

Vinnie Pestano and Zach McAllister take Kiss Cam to New York City streets (VIDEO)

MLB.com Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Zach McAllister and current closer Vinnie Pestano took to the streets of New York City during a recent roadtrip with an MLB Fan Cave camera following them.  The goal: a roving Kiss Cam.  As you will see, Major League Baseball players have pull for absolutely no reason at all. They found some people willing and others unwilling.  But my...

Nationals Trade Henry Rodriguez to Cubs for Minor Leaguer Ian Dickson

I can’t really say I am sad to see Henry Rodriguez traded from the Nationals. But I can’t say I’m happy either. It’s not everyday that you get a 100mph fire baller to walk through your doors. Henry Rodriguez just had one problem as a closer…he had no clue where that 100mph fastball was going to end up. It was a roller coaster ride every time he stepped onto the mound. What...

Second Thoughts: The sweet life of Zach and Corey

When the Indians placed Brett Myers on the 60-day DL this week, they also effectively moved the veteran from the “reclamation” pile to the junk pile-- $7 million in dough down the drain for all intents and purposes. Barring a shocking comeback, Myers is this year’s Derek Lowe. And so, for those with a perpetual ax to grind, it’s another fine occasion to either (a) bemoan...

Sailing with the Clippers: 6/6/13 - 6/12/13

The month of June continues to be a painful one for the Clippers who are now 32-34 after another losing week which saw the team go 2-4 in two series against Toledo and Gwinnett. The starting pitching has been throwing better as of late but if Columbus expects to contend for a playoff spot, the rotation will have to delve deeper into games to prevent late-season exhaustion in the...

6/15 Recap: Nationals 7 - Indians 6

Player of the Game Mark Reynolds' solo home run earned him his third Player of the Game tonight, just edging out a number of other players. It is Reynolds first award in almost a month. Feathers Up The...
