The Washington Nationals have reportedly reached a deal with Edwin Jackson, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com.  CSN Washington's Mark Zuckerman reports it is a one-year deal.  The story broke when Jackson was seen at a DC-area airport to report for a physical to finalize the deal.  The financial terms of the deal are not yet known.

When the deal is finalized, Jackson will add to the long list of Scott Boras clients under contract with the Nationals including Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper, and Stephen Strasburg.  Last year, the righty posted a 12-9 record with the White Sox and the Cardinals with 3.79 ERA and 1.437 WHIP.  He's proven himself to be a workhorse over the last 4 seasons, recording 806.1 innings during that period.  He was an All-Star in 2009.

This signing obviously has wide ranging implications for the Nationals pitching rotation.  The team has been connected to trade rumors for John Lannan, Ross Detwiler is out of options, and they just signed Chien-Ming Wang to a one-year deal.  At this point, it is entirely possible that Wang could be out of the rotation if the Nationals don't want to overload their rotation with right-handed pitching.

With this move, the Nationals get a pitcher with numbers similar to those of John Lannan, which makes Lannan easily replaceable.  Lannan will be a valuable trade chip that could help satisfy the team's No. 1 need, a starting center fielder and lead off man.  While the Jackson deal alone doesn't do a whole lot for the Nats next year, it opens up the move for Lannan, which could be transformational for the team almost immediately.
