Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman planned to get a cortisone shot for his right shoulder before Washington's doubleheader against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Manager Davey Johnson said offseason surgery to clean out Zimmerman's shoulder ''will definitely be seriously considered.'' General manager Mike Rizzo said that if Zimmerman does have an operation, ''He'd certainly be ready for whenever spring training begins.'' Zimmerman also got a cortisone shot in late June, coming off a 5-for-49 slump. He entered Wednesday batting .284 with 22 homers and 84 RBIs. Rizzo said the ''big difference'' between the shots is that now, Zimmerman is ''feeling it a little bit'' in the shoulder, but back in June, the player ''needed the cortisone shot to perform up to his standards.''

Pigs fly, snowball fights in hell, cats and dogs living in peace, and the Washington Nationals clinch a postseason berth

Nationals 4, Dodgers 1: Oh, that's weird. There's Ryan Zimmerman in a "Playoffs 2012" cap, and a postseason Natitude t-shirt. First postseason berth by a Washington baseball team since 1933? Weird. OK, go get the NL East pennant next. Now that'll really be weird. Uncharted waters...time to put the Natinals to rest. (Screencap of Zim via...

Stan Kasten is happy for the Nats

Hi, Stan. There's Stan Kasten, above, in a classic AP Photo from 2008 in a nearly finished Nationals Park. "We'll get the attendance we deserve. ... If we give the fans a reason to support us, they will be here in droves." (Stan Kasten, via Nationals.com, 4/13/2009) MLB.com's Bill Ladson caught up with the former President of the Nationals...

Ryan Zimmerman’s rolling punch/tag of Adrian Gonzalez in the balls/taint was the play of the game

There’s no way around it, yesterday’s game was a mess, but besides somehow managing to win, the best highlight was probably Ryan Zimmerman tagging/punching Adrian Gonzalez in the balls/taint. Not only did it provide amusement, but it inexplicably led to the Dodgers getting the extra run needed to win the game without going to extras. See? Even Ryan Zimmermann regrets violating...

Nationals secure postseason berth

The Washington Nationals brought postseason baseball back to the nation's capital for the first time since 1933, clinching a playoff spot Thursday night with a 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Nationals ensured at least an NL wild-card spot behind Ross Detwiler's six strong innings and Ryan Zimmerman's RBI double. Washington's magic number to win the NL...

Nationals: Potential playoff tickets to be sold

The Washington Nationals are putting tickets for potential wild card and National League division series games on sale Friday. The team with the best record in the major leagues also announced Tuesday it would sell some standing-room only tickets the day of each postseason game. The Nationals have not made the playoffs since they began play in Washington in 2005, after moving from...

Danny Espinosa Could Rejoin Nationals' Lineup Today

Washington Nationals infielder Danny Espinosa received good news yesterday regarding his injured shoulder.  Rather than the labrum or rotator cuff tear Espinosa feared, an MRI revealed that the second baseman is dealing with a bone bruise, meaning he could return to the Nationals’ lineup as soon as today, reports Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.com: "This is...

Nationals 3, Dodgers 1

Nearing their first playoff berth since arriving in Washington, the Nationals scratched out a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening game of a doubleheader Wednesday, supporting Jordan Zimmermann's six innings of one-run pitching with two RBI groundouts and a sac fly. The win was the Nationals' 90th, the most for a Major League Baseball club in the nation...

Could Christian Garcia Make The Postseason Roster?

A bit over half way through the season, I was covering a game at Nationals Park. Between innings, when the team does their Down on the Farm Report, they teased Christian Garcia’s minor league numbers. I knew of Garcia but didn’t really know his story or his stuff terribly well, so I did some reading and looked at some stats. The numbers almost looked like typos. They were...

Michael Morse "was getting electrocuted today"

Well, despite the rainout tonight and the spectre of a doubleheader against the Dodgers on Wednesday, two pieces of good news for the Nationals on Tuesday. Danny Espinosa has a bone bruise - not a tear - in his shoulder ("This is the best news we could have gotten"); and Michael Morse is apparently ready to return (IN the Nats lineup Tuesday night after missing four...

Gio Gonzalez says he is not dating Angela Rypien: ‘Absolutely not true’

Here at LBS, we tend to be curious by nature. When it came to our attention that Angela Rypien had been bragging about attending two Nationals games, we had to find out if it was a coincidence that Gio Gonzalez happened to be the starting pitcher in both of those games. The Baltimore Charm quarterback and daughter of former Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien was open on Twitter about...

Dodgers-Nationals postponed by rain; DH Wednesday

The scheduled game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals on Tuesday night was postponed because of rain. The NL clubs will make up the game on Wednesday as part of a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. EDT. Nationals manager Davey Johnson expects to use Tuesday's scheduled starter, right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, and left-hander John Lannan as his pitchers Wednesday...

DMV: Meet The Nats’ Potentially Great Unknown, Christian Garcia

September call-up Christian Garcia may be for the Nats what K-Rod was for the Angels years ago. [Fangraphs] Photo: Bryce Harper with Wale at Ben’s. Brewers-Nationals Preview

The Washington Nationals are headed to the postseason. If the Milwaukee Brewers keep playing the way they have, they could be headed there as well. After securing the franchise's second playoff berth, the Nationals look to prevent the visiting Brewers from extending their season-high winning streak to six games Friday night. For the first time since 1933, postseason baseball...
