Ian Desmond hit a grand slam in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep. Jayson Werth's RBI single with two outs in the ninth tied it off Jonathan Papelbon, who blew a save for the second time in three nights after starting the season 13 for 13. Starters Kyle Kendrick and Gio Gonzalez both were outstanding, but wound up with no-decisions. Kendrick allowed one run and two hits, striking out six in 7 2-3 innings. Gonzalez gave up two runs and two hits, tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings. He didn't allow a hit after the second batter. Ryan Zimmerman hit a one-out double off Mike Stutes (2-1) in the 11th. After Adam LaRoche was intentionally walked, Werth walked to load the bases. Desmond took a close 1-2 pitch that had manager Charlie Manuel screaming at plate umpire Alfonso Marquez from the dugout. Desmond drove the next pitch out to left-center. Drew Storen (2-1) to...

Utley to Reading Tonight, Could Return this Weekend

(AP) The Phillies have announced that Chase Utley will begin a rehab assignment in Reading tonight. Utley has been out since May 20 with an oblique/rib cage injury. Before going to the DL, Utley hit .272/.339/.475 with 7 homers and 25 RBI. With Ben Revere and Michael Young hitting their stride, the addition of Utley – which could be as early as this weekend – should strengthen...

Philadelphia Phillies Activate John Lannan, Disable Jeremy Horst

The Philadelphia Phillies have activated left-handed starter John Lannan from the 15-day disabled list after having missed two months due to a strained left quad. The 28-year-old will return to the Philadelphia rotation. To make room on the active roster for Lannan, the Phillies have placed left-handed reliever Jeremy Horst on the 15-day disabled list due to a left elbow strain....

Washington Nationals Activate 2B Danny Espinosa

The Washington Nationals h ave activated second baseman Danny Espinosa from the 15-day disabled list after recovering from a wrist injury. Espinosa, who has struggled this season, has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse and will have to prove that he is ready to return to the majors at some point this season. Until that happens, expect Anthony Rendon to continue to fill Espinosa...

Q&A: Kyle Kendrick, Evolution of a Repertoire

Kyle Kendrick isn’t all that remarkable. The Philadelphia Phillies right-hander has a standard pitcher’s frame and fairly average stuff. Neither his velocity nor his repertoire particularly stands out. His numbers — 178 career appearances; 137 of them starts — don‘t jump out at you. But that doesn’t mean the 28-year-old isn’t an effective pitcher. Relying primarily...

Despite Justin Bieber backpack, Ian Krol is not a Belieber

On Sunday, MASN's Julie Alexandria Tweeted the photo above of Nats rookie Ian Krol in a Justin Bieber backpack, leading to the logical question: "Is Krol a 'Belieber'?" Turns out the backpack can be chalked up to rookie hazing by Drew Storen, as confirmed in a pregame interview Alexandria did with Krol on MASN Tuesday night (video here): "I'm...

Danny Espinosa Is Doing Even Worse Down On The Farm

Today’s Nats chatter included much about how Danny Espinosa is no longer “rehabbing” and is now just down in AAA, working on his swing. Thing is, after hitting .158 in the bigs, he’s doing even worse with the Syracuse Chiefs. Like, 2-for-21 with 14 strikeouts worse, including an 0-for-4 with four strikeouts yesterday. Today is no better. Reporting from Charlotte, my brother...

Phillies Prez Montgomery Backs Amaro

I know some people who won’t be too happy about this. Stuck in the quagmire of another middling season, many are pointing fingers in one direction: Ruben Amaro’s. David Montgomery says, it’s not all on him. Montgomery told the Philadelphia Inquirer that it falls on several people within the organization when it comes to player evaluation, not just the GM. “The reality is...

The Washington Nationals can’t compete against the Atlanta Braves without Bryce Harper

Asinine Washington Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said Wednesday on 106.7 The Fan that Bryce Harper will resume baseball activities in “the next day or two.” Suffering shoulder and knee bruises after violently colliding with the outfield wall at Chavez Ravine on May 13, the 20-year-old Harper was finally placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 30. Shelved retroactively...

Fun With Google — Or, a Retelling of a Potential Nightmare

Most of these blog ideas start off with a weird tangent.  In today’s case, Roobs made an off-hand statement that Cubs fans seem to prefer Ruben Amaro Jr. as their general manager.  Amaro is now the GM of the Philadelphia Phillies, who as recently as a couple years ago were perennial contenders with a strong core that has since faded.  The core of that team was built by Pat Gillick...

Courtesy of The Phillies are promoting one of their Top 10 prospects, moving third baseman Maikel Franco from High Class-A Clearwater up to Double-A Reading.
