Edwin Jackson to the Nats it is, according to Jon Heyman, and it sounds like he’s getting a one-year deal. Didn’t see that one coming.
For those unfamiliar with Jackson, he’s a solid starter who averaged about 200 innings and a 4.00 ERA over the past four seasons with the Rays, Tigers, Diamondbacks, White Sox and Cardinals. He’s 28 years old and strikes out about seven batters per nine innings. Not bad.
The dollars are not yet known, but he made almost $9 million last season, so it’s probably in that ballpark. And his signing makes for a crowded rotation. Here’s how it looks, in no particular order:
1. Stephen Strasburg
2. Jordan Zimmermann
3. Gio Gonzalez
4. John Lannan
5. Edwin Jackson
6. Chien-Ming Wang
7. Ross Detwiler
8. Tom Gorzelanny
That’s a lot of depth, and with Strasburg and Wang in there, they’ll probably need it. Plus, it’s just a one-year deal. No harm, no foul, and Jackson is a solid fourth or fifth starter, depending on how you view him vs. Lannan.
