With the Reds trading away Alonso, Grandal, Boxberger, Torreyes and Sappelt the Reds lost 5 of their Top 25 prospects in my rankings. Here are the new guys ranked #21-25 now that those guys have departed (For full scouting reports on these guys and about 85 more guys, click on that link above and buy the 2012 (Reds) Prospect Guide):
21. Donnie Joseph – LHP – 23 years old – AA
Background: 2009 Draft – 3rd Round
The good: Improved his fastball velocity, throwing as high as 96 and has a plus secondary pitch.
Needs to work on: Throwing his slider for strikes. When he couldn’t throw it in the strikezone, hitters sat on his fastball and hit him hard.
22. Junior Arias – 3B – 19 years old – Rookie Ball
Background: NDFA – 2008
The good: Above average power today and a good hit tool.
Needs to work on: Plate discipline is an issue, as was his defense at third base in his first season there.
23. Juan Duran – OF – 19 years old ...

Source: Reds agree to deal with Madson
The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to sign closer Ryan Madson pending a physical examination, a major league source confirmed to FOXSports.com.
Madson likely will be the Reds closer, after saving 32 games with a 2.37 ERA for the Phillies last year. Philadelphia replaced Madson early in the free-agent period by signing Jonathan Papelbon to a four-year, 50 million contract.
Madson effectively...

Friday news and notes
I got an email from the printing company last night. Books are at the UPS sorting station and on their way to me. They should start shipping on Monday, assuming they get here on the scheduled time. If you haven’t ordered yours, you might want to check out that picture above and get on that.
The Reds announced several new Spring Training invitees yesterday: RHP Daniel Corcino...
Why Francisco Cordero Doesn’t Have A Job
This off-season, Major League teams forced a quality group of proven closers into a game of musical chairs. There were too many guys with ninth inning experience on the market and not enough jobs to go around, which directly led to Ryan Madson‘s decision to take the last available closer’s job by signing a one year deal with Cincinnati. Madson’s move to the Reds...
Phillies Ryan Madson will be missed, Good Luck, Mad Dog
The moment that the Phillies signed Jonathan Papelbon, I knew Ryan Madson was gone. Loyalty? Nope. Why not? Because as a ballplayer in this day and age, you have to set yourself up for the big contract. Madson got an $8.5 million, one year deal with the Reds. The big deal is not this year for Madson. It is next year when other closer jobs became available. According to baseball analyst...
Jonah Keri Likes the Reds Off-Season
It’s not just us. Grantland’s Jonah Keri has nothing but praise for Walt Jocketty’s off-season moves – particularly the Ryan Madson signing.
The lead:
Here’s what we knew about the pitching market heading into this offseason: There were exactly zero elite free-agent starting pitchers available, and roughly 83,000 closers. Any time there’s little...
Let Aroldis Chapman Start!!!
The Cincinnati Reds just signed Ryan Madson to a one year, $8.5 million deal in what is being called one of the best offseason free agent signings in recent memory. I personally think it’s a great move not because of Madson’s pitching superiority, but because it solidifies the Reds bullpen to finally allow Aroldis Chapman to start. The Madson signing gives the Reds...
Free Agent Relief Pitcher Ryan Madson in Serious Talks with the Cincinnati Reds
Ryan Madson is in serious talks with the Cincinnati Reds, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Madson spent 2011 as a closer for the Philadelphia Phillies, saving 32 games while posting a 2.37 ERA.
He had spent the previous four seasons as a setup man before the team before injuries thrust him into the closing role. He responded with a superb year, coinciding with his free agent...
Liscio's Bakery Has New Face
Ryan Madson's signing with Cincinnati leaves Liscio's Bakery without a face for their advertising campaign. Or does it? Those business savvy Italians were quick to ink Hunter "Good game, let's go eat" Pence to take over for Mad Dog. Suddenly I'm starving for a cannoli.
On Ryan Madson: Parsing Boras’ comments
Philadelphia general manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. and super-agent Scott Boras are having a skirmish of words regarding the Phillies' non-signing of closer Ryan Madson. Boras seems to be saying the Phillies reneged on their offer of $44 million over four years, while Amaro says, "there never was an agreement."
Obviously, since Madson is now a Cincinnati Red, Amaro is correct...
Jocketty's retooling is the right plan for Reds
Walt Jocketty has been criticized for trading five prospects in deals to land Sean Marshall and Mat Latos, but the Reds GM made the right decision to push for the 2012 NL Central title.
AP source: Reds, Madson reach $8.5M, 1-year deal
Free-agent closer Ryan Madson and the Cincinnati Reds reached an oral agreement on an $8.5 million, one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the deal.
Source: Reds sign ex-Phillie Madson for 1 year
The Cincinnati Reds have signed former Phillies closer Ryan Madson to a one-year deal, according to a source.
On Barry Larkin
Barry Larkin (Chad Dotson/Redleg Nation)***Warning: I’m gonna ramble a bit here.***
On Monday, my favorite baseball player was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
I’ve been thinking about Barry Larkin a lot these last few days. If you’ve read Redleg Nation for any length of time, you’ll know that I’m one of these gooey, Field of Dreams-type...
Scott Boras to MLB GMs: I’m Smarter Than You Are, Why Didn’t You Want Ryan Madson?
Scott Boras doesn't just think he's the smartest man in the room - he'll tell you he is.
