Found March 25, 2013 on Diamond Hoggers:
I’m not all that excited about writing the Mets preview this year. I’ve had the same feeling for a few years now when I write the Mets preview. They’re still part of the fraternal order of Major League Baseball. Due to that, I’ll settle in and do my best to give them their share of the spotlight. It’s just that the Mets might be without David Wright to open the season due to a ribcage injury he suffered in the World Baseball Classic. If the Mets don’t have their newly crowned captain, they’re not that interesting of a team. Major Off-Season Moves: Traded for John Buck Traded for Travis d’Arnaud Signed Shaun Marcum Traded for Collin Cowgill Released Jason Bay Getting out from under Jason Bay’s albatross of a salary was probably their biggest move of the winter. The Mets are in one of baseball’s primo divisions this year, and it’s going to be tough for them to provide bright spots for their fan base. Gone are R.A. Dickey, Scott Hairston, Mike Pelfrey, and Andres Torres. All decent p...

Mets Card of the Week: 2007 David Wright

2007 BOWMAN’S BEST DAVID WRIGHT O Captain, my Captain… OK, OK, I’ll get off the top of my desk for a minute to talk about our Mr. Wright. The New York sports media do not occur naturally where I live, nor do I seek them out actively on my own. So while I imagine that David Wright being named captain of the Mets got back-page/top-of-fold play up north, down here in Virginia...

Mets Shouldn’t Push Wright For Opening Day Start

With most strained and pulled muscles, a sound approach is whatever timetable is given just add a week. Given that, I don’t see why the Mets seem to be rushing David Wright, who sustained a strained left intercostal muscle while at the WBC. I also don’t see why Wright is rushing himself. WRIGHT: Needs to slow down. Didn’t anybody learn anything from the Johan Santana fiasco...

Encouraging News For Wright; Opening Day A Possibility

After he played in a minor league game today, the Mets softened their position on whether David Wright could be ready for Opening Day. When Wright was pulled from the World Baseball Classic last week, manager Terry Collins was thinking a month. Not any longer. “I would not be surprised if David Wright is there Opening Day,’’ Collins told reporters today. “There will be a...

Featured Post: The Mets Needed To Make Wright Captain

There is a conspiracy theory everywhere you look. I read one suggesting the Mets made David Wright captain to divert attention away from the field, where they are projected to be bad. Very bad. Smokescreens like that never work. Besides, Mets fans are like children and dogs in a way, after awhile, they know when they’re getting duped.C’mon. Are you serious? How long do you...

Some Encouraging News For Wright; Opening Day Now A Possibility

After he played in a minor league game today, the Mets softened their position on whether David Wright could be ready for Opening Day. When Wright was pulled from the World Baseball Classic last week, manager Terry Collins was thinking a month. Not any longer. “I would not be surprised if David Wright is there Opening Day,’’ Collins told reporters today. “There will be a...

Married to the Mets: Wright waiting for young help

David Wright got engaged last winter to his longtime girlfriend, model Molly Beers. By then he was already married to the New York Mets - for better or for worse. In their most reassuring move of a pivotal offseason, the struggling Mets committed to building around their All-Star third baseman by signing Wright to an eight-year contract worth $138 million, the richest deal in team...

New York Mets Name David Wright Team Captain

For the last several years, David Wright has been the leader of the New York Mets. The Mets decided to finally make it official, naming the star third baseman the fourth captain in team history, MetsBlog.com reports. Wright, who just signed an eight year contract in the offseason, becomes the first team captain for the [...] [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for...

David Wright, Daniel Murphy And The Year Of The Intercostal Injury

This spring has been rocked by injuries for the Mets thus far. Maybe it’s because we live in New York, and hear about the injuries more, but it doesn’t seem like as many teams have suffered the amount of injuries that the two New York teams have this spring. While injuries are sometimes unpreventable and part of the game, the injuries this spring that really made me scratch...

Injury Updates: Wright Making Progress; Murphy, Santana Lagging Behind

Day-to-day is exactly how it sounds, which means the Mets aren’t ready to announce David Wright’s Opening Day status. Wright has been moving cautiously in trying to come back from a strained left intercostal muscle. He’s been fielding and hitting off a tee, which is ahead of what was originally thought. WRIGHT: Making progress. Batting practice followed by games are the next...

Opening Day Prospects Improve For Wright And Murphy

After repeatedly expressing doubt recently David Wright and Daniel Murphy will in the Opening Day lineup, the Mets changed course today and indicated otherwise. Murphy, speaking on WFAN, said he expects to play. Manager Terry Collins said Murphy could play in a major league exhibition game tomorrow, which represents a huge mistake if he were injured and had to go on the disabled...

Mets Roster Taking Shape; Matt Harvey Rocked

The Mets are closer to settling on their Opening Day roster, and being the Mets, some of their decision-making is predicated on injuries. MURPHY: DL bound? Half their infield – third baseman David Wright and second baseman Daniel Murphy, both of whom are slowed with strained intercostal muscles – will be determined at the end of the week, but the disabled list remains very much...

It Will Be An Interesting April For The Mets

Interesting April? That is for sure. Expectations are clearly low for the Mets this year. However, they were also low last year, and the team gave fans at least three months of a season before falling off a cliff. Yes, on paper this team doesn’t look good, and they have been hampered by an astonishing number of injuries this Spring. However, this is baseball, and anything can happen...
