New York Mets ace right hander Matt Harvey finally underwent Tommy John surgery on his injured pitching elbow on Tuesday. Harvey had tried to avoid surgery for several weeks, believing he could simply rehab the injury and return to the mound. It was finally determined his best course was to undergo surgery. The 24-year-old hurler had his surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews, and he will miss all of the 2014 season, with eyes towards returning for the start of the 2015 campaign. His partially torn ulnar collateral ligament was repaired in the surgery and there were no unforeseen complications. The Mets need Harvey to get healthy as quickly as possible. Along with third baseman David Wright, Harvey represents the future of the franchise. The team simply can’t go anywhere without him around. The 2013 was the second season of Harvey’s young career and he was outstanding before getting injured. He was the National League’s starter at the 2013 All-Star Game and certainly deserved that honor. In 26 starts, Harvey compiled a record of 9-5, with a 2.27 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. In 178.1 innings, he struck out 191 batters, while walking 31 and giving up just 135 hits. In short, he was unbelievable on the mound. He is undoubtedly one of baseball’s top young pitchers and this injury is devastating to Mets. Without Harvey the team plans to add two pitchers from outside the organization to bolster its current rotation. The Mets expect left-hander Jonathon Niese and righties Zack Wheeler and Dillon Gee to be the top three starters on the roster. Sadly, we won’t get to see the 6-4, 225-pound North Carolina product next season. But we will eagerly be awaiting his return in 2015.
