TEAMS: New York Mets, Chicago White Sox, Cleveland Indians
Tuesday, the New York Mets announced that they wouldn't be re-signing left-handed pitcher Chris Capuano for the 2012 season and beyond. After being signed by general manager Sandy Alderson in the 2011 offseason, Capuano was a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter for the Mets in 2011, and it was a surprise that he wouldn't be brought back.
The word on the street is that the main reason Alderson is willing to let Capuano go is because of the dire salary cap situation the Mets are facing right now.
Chris' base salary for 2011 was $1.5 million and that number ballooned to $3.925 million due to incentive caps Capuano reached during the season. Apparently, Alderson doesn't want to commit two years and $8 million to the southpaw, a contract which Capuano is looking to sign.
Losing Capuano from the rotation is a big blow to the Mets' pitching staff for the 2012 season. Even with oft-injured star pitcher Johan Santana returning from shoulder surgery, the starting rot...

Capuano too pricey
Photo by Michael BaronReports circulated yesterday that Chris Capuano is seeking a two year deal and that the Mets are only willing to go one. The chorus of Wilpon bashing can once again chime in but in my opinion the Mets are taking the right stance on this one. Cappy was a decent back of the rotation guy but he fatigued down the stretch and is too much of an injury risk to give...
Free Agent Stock Watch: Chris Capuano
Free agent left-hander Chris Capuano seeks a multiyear deal this offseason and, as improbable as it would have seemed two years ago, he may actually get one. The 33-year-old has recovered from Tommy John surgery -- his second such operation -- and two lost seasons to become a solid back-of-the-rotation option.
Capuano, who didn’t pitch in the Major Leagues in 2008 or 2009...
Video: Alderson On SNY Mets Hot Stove
Tonight, Sandy Alderson was a guest of Kevin Burkhardt on SNY’s Mets Hot Stove show. Here is Parts 1 and 2 of the interview courtesy of SNY.tv.
Part One
On Reyes – “We’ve had a couple of face to face meetings, but I wouldn’t call them substantive in terms of a contract negotiation…Once the exclusive period ends, and other offers roll in, then I think things become...
Morning Grind: What The Hell Is Sandy Alderson Doing?
I have always been very complimentry of Alderson, I was happy to see him hired as GM, I liked a few of his moves. Although, when it comes to how he has handled Jose Reyes, I can only say: What the hell are you doing?
In spring training, the Mets had an excellent opportunity to have Reyes for a reasonable price after a mediocre 2010 campaign, yet Alderson let that window pass.Once...
MetsBlog Q&A: Cerrone talks to Sandy about spending
Tonight, Sandy Alderson will be a guest on this season’s debut episode of SNY’s Mets Hot Stove, which airs every Thursday night at 6 pm ET.
Last week, MetsBlog’s Matthew Cerrone caught up with Alderson for a quick, five-minute talk about the team’s strategy in regards to payroll and spending, which you can read below:

You Can’t Handle The Truth
For many, our first impression was one of openness and honesty. When Sandy Alderson was introduced as general manager he spoke of wanting to win, yet said there would be difficult times. He gave hope things would be different in the new regime.
There seemed to be an honesty about him absent from previous Mets management and the current ownership. You wanted to trust him.
While Alderson...
Alderson knows what he is doing
Sure, the 2011 season was not overtly successful. The Mets lost more games than they won. But, it also gave me every reason to believe that Alderson knows exactly what he is doing and has a vision to bring this team to a point of long term sustainable success. And, just because he is not making headlines by being the most aggressive pursuer of Reyes, there is difference between...
Email Q&A, pres. by Citi: Where is this all going?
Steven DiMartino, in a series of posts on Twitter, earlier today said:
“Look, all I’m looking for (from Sandy Alderson) is direction. … This team has a HUGE public relations problem here. … You have to tell me, the guy buying season tickets, where are you going with this team. … If you say, “Look, we have young pitchers and we want to rebuild...
On Baseball: In the N.L. East, Mets Are Likely to Go From Bad to Dreadful
Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson knows that his team may have to get worse before it can better in the competitive N.L. East.
What Are Some Possible Options For The Rotation
As Free Agency kicks into high gear Sandy Alderson and his cronies have a lot of holes to fill to be able to field a competitive team next season. The hope is that a healthy Johan Santana will head the rotation, but despite make a few minor league starts this past summer he is no sure thing. We are not assured he will be healthy for a full season, or even be the same pitcher...
Hope Is Not A Strategy
Sandy Alderson was brought in here as a fixer, to clean up the mess created by the Wilpon’s financial mess and years of mismanagement on the GM level.
Since the Mets’ last World Series appearance in 2000, they have been about quick fixes. They never had a chance at Alex Rodriguez, which is just as well, but Roberto Alomar and Mo Vaughn were quick fix and gimmick signings. Ditto...

In today's Insider-only blog post, ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Mets will not engage in a bidding war for free agent shortstop Jose Reyes. They will make him an offer they feel comfortable with, then move on if he rejects it.
Within the same piece, Olney says that David Wright...
Broxton: why is a 27 y/o closer willing to take a 1yr deal
Andy Martino of the Daily News took a look at what closers would fit into the Mets plans. Sandy Alderson said the team would be going outside the organization for next year's closer, with the payroll cuts it will have to be someone on a short term, low base salary, incentive laden deal. Martino brought up Brad Lidge, Joe Nathan and Jonathan Broxton. In the article Broxton...
