The New York Mets have been one of the pleasant surprises in the National League this season. But now they’ve lost three games in a row. Can they regain their mojo and get back on the right side of the MLB odds as they continue a road trip with stops in the Bronx and Tampa beginning this weekend?

Heading into the last game of a three-game set in Washington Thursday New York was looking to salvage one game. The Mets lost the last game of a series vs. St. Louis Monday 5-4, and got beat by the Nationals Tuesday 7-6 and Wednesday 5-3.

So going into Thursday’s play New York sits in fourth place in the tight NL East, but they’re only 2.5 games out of first.

Still, with the strength of that division, in which at points recently every team was above .500, losing streaks of four and five games can be very hurtful, even at this early juncture of the season.

The Mets will run into a Yankees team this weekend bent on taking over in the AL East. The Yanks have won 10 of their last 13 games to pull within a half-game of first-place Baltimore, and got some great news out of struggling starter Ivan Nova when he gave up just one run in eight-plus innings in a win over Tampa Wednesday.

Luckily for the Mets they’ll miss CC Sabathia this weekend; he pitches Thursday vs. Tampa.

Last year the Yanks took  four of six games from the Mets.

The Rays have lost the first two games of a series in the Bronx and have to face Sabathia Thursday. Tampa is also just 2-6 over its last eight games. The Rays seem to finally miss 3B Evan Longoria, who’s been out for over a month now with a pulled hamstring. They soldiered on fairly well without him for a time, but with their recent swoon are now just 16-17 in his absence.

The Mets themselves recently welcomed back C Josh Thole, who missed nearly a month after suffering a concussion, and OF Jason Bay is expected to return to the lineup Thursday night after he’s missed six weeks with a rib injury.

As of Thursday Bovada.lv is offering the Mets at 12/1 to win the NL East this season, while 5Dimes.eu is listing them at +1800 to win the National League and +3900 to win the World Series.
