According to multiple reports, the New York Mets have officially non-tendered centerfielder Andres Torres, reliever Manny Acosta, and right-handed starter Mike Pelfrey. Though the Mets can still sign Pelfrey at a lower rate — arbitration-eligible players who are tendered contracts must receive at least 80 % of their previous year’s salaries, Mike made $5.6M in 2012 — the former first round pick expects to pitch elsewhere next season, according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York: “For me, I prefer to start. I haven’t really had a whole lot of discussions with [Boras] about that. I know they kind of mentioned it doesn’t make sense to have Tommy John and then go to the bullpen. For me, my first option would be to start. I feel like I can give a team 200-plus innings, which is pretty valuable. Coming off surgery, the biggest thing for me is I need to pitch. Coming into camp as the extra guy is not something I would want to do. … I didn’t work that hard to be an extra guy. I want to take the ball every fifth day. Obviously, numbers-wise, if they have five starters, I wouldn’t come back. … If the Mets have five starters, I guess I’ll end up pitching somewhere else.” Pelfrey had a very up and down career as a Met, to say the least.   At times he showed flashes of a top of the rotation starter.  But, most Mets fans will remember big Pelf for his mental breakdowns and hand licking episodes on the mound.  Personally, I came to the realization that the 6’7″ starter would never live up to his first-round draft status, but was in fact a very serviceable starter. Logging 180+ innings in four straight seasons.  Prior to his injury in 2012, Pelf gave NY three solid outings allowing just five earned runs over 24 innings of work.   For us here at MetsZilla, we would like to wish Pelfrey luck.  He will always have a special place in our heart — not only for the heartburn he caused — but because the post which launched this blog was written about the former Wichata State product.
