Start spreading the news — nobody is heading to Cooperstown this year. With the revelation that the Baseball Writers Association of American (BBWAA) did not vote in a single player to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, many baseball fans are left with a bit of an empty feeling. That feeling, appropriately, was captured by The New York Times. The Gray Lady pulled no punches, publishing a blank front above the fold on its sports section Thursday, with the headline “And the Inductees Are …” followed by … nothing. It might have been nice to at least throw Craig Biggio some kind of bone for coming the closest, but the Times seems to be making a fair point about the bizarre nature of the (non-existant) Cooperstown Class of 2013. Yes, the Hall’s Veteran’s Committe still voted to induct Hank O’Day, Jacob Ruppert and Deacon White and yes, the Hall will re-honor Lou Gehrig and Roger Hornsby this summer, but the fact remains that the Hall won’t be welcoming any living members into its wings this summer. Additionally, you probably have no idea who O’Day, Ruppert and White are without punching them into a search engine. Ultimately, the Hall will likely find a way to address the Steroids Era, and this year’s (lack of a) class might just be a blip in the history books. However, for now, it’s hard not to side with the fans feeling a little empty when considering the voting results. Check out the final product in the photo below.
