Ode to Brett Gardner. After a perennial sluggish start, the New York Yankees have smoothed out the kinks and are playing solid baseball again. This doesn’t mean the Yankees problems are solved but it does show fans that the Bombers can still compete at the top, which was once again somewhat in question not so long ago. At this point in the season, no team is home free. The likelihood of more slumps and injuries are as unavoidable as they are unpredictable but there are always concerns that teams can prepare for beforehand. For the Yankees that concern is replacing the still injured Brett Gardner. Gardner brings a dynamic to the Yankees that cannot be replaced with anyone on the 25-man current roster. No one can steal bags like Gardner, but my concern is the lack of defense that is now in left field everyday. THE CURRENT SITUATION: Heading into the dog days of summer platooning Raul Ibanez, Dewayne Wise and Andruw Jones in left field just aren’t realistic long-term options. Ibanez a...

If the Yankees are forced to trade why not rent Carlos

Carlos Quentin (Photo credit: Wikipedia) The New York Yankees are rolling. Winning their fifth game in a row by beating the Braves for the second night with a score of 6-4. Skipper Joe Girardi and crew deserve the recognition here for guiding this team through all the adversity and injuries. So now that we all know the Yankees can still win, what will GM Brian Cashman due to insure...

Update On Pettitte's Hand

From Chad Jennings:Andy Pettitte had his left hand wrapped after today’s game, but he said he felt fortunate. He was fortunate to get out of the sixth inning, and fortunate to leave with no real concern about making his next start. “It’s swollen, and as soon as the swelling gets out, it’ll be fine,” Pettitte said. “It swelled up, got me up high on the hand, toward...

Alex Rodriguez hit his 23rd career grand slam on Tuesday night, and in doing so, tied Yankees legend Lou Gehrig for first on the all-time list.

BRUSH WITH GREATNESS

Kid who caught homer meets A-Rod

The young man who caught Rodriguez's record-tying, 23rd career grand slam did so in his cap and even met the slugger after the game when he returned the ball to A-Rod.

Game 61: A-Rod Goes Grand in Comeback

New York Yankees 6 — Atlanta Braves 4   Alex Rodriguez begins the comeback rally in tonight’s 6-4 win over the Atlanta Braves.   Recently, CC Sabathia can be considered the weakest member of the starting rotation. Despite giving up 4 runs and 10 hits allowed, this outing was not a bad outing. 3 of [...]

Nothing but respect between Jeter, Jones

They were both young and full of vigor in 1996, two guys barely in their 20s and just starting careers full of promise. Chipper Jones and Derek Jeter met on the field that year as the Atlanta Braves and New Yankees played in the World Series. They both had the talent and tools and seemed destined for greatness, but it would have been tough for anyone to predict that they would...

Podcast Episode 10: Interleague Swan Song

After this season, interleague play as we know it probably will cease to exist. The 6-game season series between the Yankees and the Mets should be a thing of the past, and there should be no more large chunks of time spent playing teams in the other league. The Yankees just swept the first 3 games of the 2012 Subway Series and now enter into that large chunk of time playing the...

Daniel Bard Can Look to Success of Yankees' Phil Hughes to Get Back to Former Pitching Greatness

On a bright Sunday afternoon recently, both the Red Sox and Yankees sent young starting pitchers to the mound. In Toronto, Daniel Bard pitched the saddest 1 2/3 innings of his career. In his 55 pitches, he threw just 24 strikes, hitting two batters and walking another six. He allowed five runs. In Detroit, Phil Hughes pitched one of his best games ever. He went nine innings for the...

BP Unfiltered: Russell Branyan, Jack Cust, and a TTO Dream Come True by Ben Lindbergh

Some very prominent prospects are putting up some very pretty numbers in Triple-A. But you can have Adam Eaton's .398 average, Anthony Rizzo's 22 homers, Brett Jackson's eight triples, Anthony Gose' 24 steals, and Trevor Bauer's 11.8 strikeouts per nine. I'll take these two: That's half of the box score from Sunday's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees...
