The first week of 2013 was a pretty slow one in terms of Pirates news, but here’s a quick roundup:
As you’ve surely seen far too many times by now on Twitter or Facebook, Andrew McCutchen is in the running to be on the cover of MLB 13 The Show. You can vote for him by tweeting with the hashtag MLB13Cutch or by clicking here and using Facebook.
Remember Francisco Liriano? The Joel Hanrahan trade talk sort of overshadowed the buzz about his signing, and there’s this slight little detail also holding things up: Liriano hasn’t actually signed yet. There doesn’t appear to be a problem, but he hasn’t actually made it to Pittsburgh yet to take his physical.
Meanwhile, the Pirates released pitcher Rick VandenHurk this week, presumably to make room for Liriano on the 40-man roster. VandenHurk, who pitched well in AAA but imploded a couple times with the Bucs during the collapse, will reportedly sign with a foreign team.
The Bucs made some changes to their minor league coaching staffs. You can check out the full rundown here.
Frank Coonelly told Kipper of the Pittsburgh Sports Forum that the Pirates are in the process of creating a new “Jolly Roger logo” for 2014. RumBunter & friends have already posted some ideas.
ROOT Sports will be re-playing some of the best Pirates games from 2012 for the next several Monday nights, starting tonight at 7PM. Here’s the full schedule.
