It was another slow week in Bucco-land, but here are some tidbits as we inch towards spring training…

  • RumBunter did a podcast interview with Clint Hurdle. You should listen to it.
  • The Bucs signed pitcher Daniel Cabrera to a minor league deal. Cabrera is known for an extremely live arm and some extreme control issues. The Pirates actually pursued him when he was a free agent in the ’08-’09 offseason, but luckily didn’t end up with him as he continued to be pretty bad. The righty hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2009 and I’ll be surprised if he makes it past Indy this year.
  • The Reds signed Jeff Francis to a minor league deal. A lot of people seemed to think Francis would be a good fit for the Pirates, and if they had the chance to add him on a minor league deal, they probably should have. He isn’t a lock for a big league rotation, but the Bucs need pitching depth and you could make the argument he’s better than Kevin Correia.
  • Speaking of minor league deals, Zach Duke signed one with the Astros on Friday. Good for Zach latching on with a team near his home town. There’s a good chance he’ll face the Pirates at some point this season.
  • Bud Selig said that he expects the new playoffs format (with one extra team making it in each league) to begin this year.
  • The Cardinals have agreed to a contract with Roy Oswalt. Great.
