It appears Ramon Hernandez will finish
out the year as a Red after all.
Veteran catcher Ramon Hernandez was claimed off waivers by an unspecified team on Friday, but it appears as though the 35-year old will be staying put in Cincy. The Reds quickly pulled him back and at this point, cannot be claimed by another team. All of this courtesy of Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman.
The move to keep Hernandez in a Reds uniform may pay huge dividends down the road. The 13-year veteran is projected to be a Type A free agent (ranks in the top 20% of players at his position) by the Elias Sports Bureau at season's end. So what does this mean for the Redlegs? If Hernandez decides to sign with another team in the offseason after being offered arbitration by the Reds, Cincinnati could potentially receive the top draft pick from the team who signs him, as well as a supplemental selection in the upcoming MLB Draft as compensation.
