Juan Nicasio remains an enigma. After getting blasted in his two previous starts the right-hander pitched a gem Saturday night in the Rockies' 1-0 victory over the Dodgers. It was the Rockies' first 1-0 victory of the season and just the 17th in franchise history. In his final appearance of 2013 Nicasio's four-seam fastball was humming consistently at 94-95 mph. More important it found its target. That enabled him to pitch 5 ⅓ scoreless innings allowing just three hits and striking out seven. The victory allowed the Rockies to avoid their second consecutive 90-loss season. When Nicasio pitches like he did Saturday night at Chavez Ravine it's easier to understand why manager Walt Weiss says he considers Nicasio a prime contender for next year's starting rotation. Nicasio and lefty reliever Josh Outman (one walk) left a bases-loaded mess for Adam Ottavino in the sixth but Ottavino got Juan Uribe to foul out to catcher Jordan Pacheco and got Scott Van Slyke to fly out to right. All told five Rockies relievers held the Dodgers scoreless and hitless for 3 ⅔ innings. Closer Rex Brothers got four outs to record his 18th save and second four-out save of the season. The Rockies scored their lone run in the fourth off of Los Angeles starter Zack Greinke. Troy Tulowitzki hit a one-out double and trotted home on Nolan Arenado's double.
