Here’s a couple of interesting notes from our NL East foes… Right-handed reliever Chad Qualls has signed a one-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. Qualls, 33, has made 512 appearances over the last seven years – the most in the majors. He gets a one-year deal worth $1.15 million and is expected to go at the head of the line to become the Phillies setup man for newly acquired closer Jonathan Papelbon. “We don’t have a whole lot of depth in the eighth inning,” said general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.. Qualls made himself available at a reasonable price and we’re happy to have him. We really liked his stuff at the end of the season and we actually thought of trading for him at times…He sinks the ball well, which should be good because we catch the ball.” Qualls was 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 77 games for the Padres last year, but had a 1.96 ERA in his final 19 appearances. Meanwhile, Davey Johnson has no doubt that phenom prospect Bryce Harper is ready to make the jump to the major lea...

Phillies Sign RHP Chad Qualls

The Phillies have yet again added to their offseason shopping list. This time, they’ve reeled in a right-handed relief pitcher by the name of Chad Qualls. The 33 year-old Qualls has 8 major league seasons under his belt. In those 8, he’s garnered a career 38-34 record and a 3.78 ERA. Qualls last pitched for the San Diego Padres, where he appeared 77 times. Although posting a...

Update: Bryce Harper is not a fan of the Redskins, Georgetown, Wizards, or Caps...

...loves the Nationals though. Bryce Harper has been taking questions from his Twitter followers over past week, which is a pretty cool thing. That's how the world found out that his puppy Swag would, in fact, accompany him to Washington when he arrives, and that he showers four times before a game as part of his pregame routine. Last night, Harper reminded DMV sports fans...

Daily Friar 1.31.12

Former Padre Chad Qualls signed with the Phillies this morning. He's their problem now. Let's not forget (or maybe we should) how well he pitched when the Padres were in Philadelphia. In case you need a reminder he gave up three homeruns to hand the Phils the game. A game that the Padres had in the bag. He had decent numbers at Petco, but his road numbers were just okay....

Phillies add Chad Qualls to the bullpen

The Phillies made a solid addition to their bullpen today, signing reliever Chad Qualls to a one year, 1.15 million dollar contract.  Qualls put up some decent numbers (3.51 ERA, 1.25 WHIP) last season, though he was pitching mostly in the pitcher-friendly confines of San Diego.  An 8 year veteran, the Phillies will be his 5th MLB team.  He is capable of pitching a lot of innings...

Phils add more depth to the pen as they sign Chad Qualls.

The Phils today have announced that they have just signed former Padres righthander Chad Qualls to a one-year, $1.5 million dollars contract. Qualls, who had pitched for the Padres last season, will be joining the Phils’ bullpen of Jonathan Papelbon, Jose Contreras, Antonio Bastardo, Michael Stutes, Kyle Kendrick and Dontrelle Willis, along with several others, for spring training...

Should The Nationals Start Bryce Harper In Right Field?

Reports coming out of our nation's capital are indiciating that Washington Nationals manager Davey Johnson is looking to have top prospect Bryce Harper start the year in DC in right field, with incumbent right fielder Jayson Werth shifting to center. My immediate thoughts are that the team is rushing Harper, and that they should let him at least start the season in the minor...

The 33-year-old Qualls went 6-8 with a 3.51 ERA in 77 games for San Diego last season. Bryce Harper, Opening Day Starter?

On Tuesday, Jon Heyman reported that Davey Johnson really wants Bryce Harper to begin the season as his everyday right fielder. While we don’t have a direct quote from Johnson confirming the story, the fact that the alternative is some combination of Roger Bernadina, Mike Cameron, and Xavier Paul, it’s understandable that Johnson would prefer the uber-talented Harper in his...

The Phillies wanted more bullpen depth, so on Tuesday they signed right-hander Chad Qualls to a one-year, $1.15 million contract.

Why Bryce Harper likes his favorite teams

Yes, it’s a bit sad that grown adults — including this one, typing these words — are studiously analyzing the 140-characters-at-a-time favorite sports teams of a 19-year old baseball slugger. Yes, three blog posts on this subject is probably a bit much. Read full article >>

The BP First Take: Wednesday, February 1 by Daniel Rathman

The first time I began to feel old was when players younger than me started reaching the majors last season. Jordan Lyles, Arodys Vizcaino, Julio Teheran, Jacob Turner, and Mike Trout were the culprits in 2011. According to Jon Heyman, if Nationals manager Davey Johnson has his way, Bryce Harper will join that club on Opening Day of the 2012 campaign. Harper, who is arguably the...
