The Dan Haren to Boston speculation is picking up, with Mike DiGiovanna of the LA Times adding this nugget (via MLBTradeRumors): The Angels might try to include Vernon Wells in a trade. DiGiovanna speculates they could ask for John Lackey in return, and even kick in some money to Boston. [Now return to the headline and read that 27 times in a row.] Hopefully this is LA-driven gossip, with them hoping to drum up interest, and not something the Sox would even consider. (The Sox have been adept at this themselves over the years.) Yes, Lackey has been a disaster. But thanks to his injury, he now has an extra year on his contract at minimum salary. That means his contract is now somewhere in the vicinity of three years, $34 million (give or take). Assuming Lackey was pitching hurt two years ago and now might be recovered, it's reasonable that he could provide some value -- that he could be an average pitcher, or a slightly below-average pitcher. He could return some of the investment, though it's obviously not likely to be a full return. Not the full contract, mind you, but the remaining three years. (Remember the Theo mantra: A sunk cost is a sunk cost. Forget about those first three years.) Wells, on the other hand, is absolutely terrible. He posted a -0.3 WAR playing part time last year, and made $21 million. He's got two more years at that price, and unlike Lackey there is no way to speculate he could be saved. He can't get on base, he can't field, he can't hit for power -- he can't do anything. He's a waste of a roster spot. I would trust Che-Hsuan Lin with the bat more than Vernon Wells. The only way something like this would make sense is if the Angels paid literally his entire deal and then the Red Sox immediately waived him, effectively trading John Lackey for Dan Haren. Which obviously would be insane for LA. So yeah, let's move on from this idea, like, pronto.
