HOUSTON (AP) -- Reid Ryan choked back tears as he was introduced as president of his beloved Astros, the team he grew up watching in the days when his Hall of Fame father, Nolan Ryan, starred as a pitcher for Houston. "My ties with the Astros go all the way back to 1980 when my dad came over," Reid Ryan said. "Today really is a dream come true because you grow up an Astros fan if you're in Houston. Everybody's got their hometown team, and the Astros were mine. This is just a very special day." Astros owner Jim Crane certainly appreciates having the Ryan name associated with his team again, but was quick to point out that Reid Ryan is much more than simply the son of a famous ball player. "It's great to have your kid in the business, but now he can prove himself as Reid Ryan," Crane said. "His dad's is a famed player, a very, very famous guy, but Reid's the kind of guy that stands on his own, and I think you'll see him sta...

Report: Reid Ryan, Son of Nolan Ryan, to Be Named President of Houston Astros

Ian Kinsler Stumbles, Faceplants Into Bag While Trying to Slide Into Third Base (GIF)

Before going any further, it needs to be said that Rangers second baseman Ian Kinsler is a very good baserunner. Over the course of his eight-year career he’s stolen 160 bases and been caught just 33 times for a solid 83 percent success rate. He’s also generally known around baseball as a “heads-up” baserunner, rarely making a miscue or running into a giveaway out. All that...

A.J. Pierzynski could rejoin Rangers Tuesday

When the Texas Rangers initially placed catcher A.J. Pierzynski on the disabled list with an oblique injury, the veteran backstop was frustrated by the move. However, Pierzynski now admits that he "probably shouldn't have kept playing" through the pain, as he's now revealed that he's been dealing with a torn oblique, not a strain as originally thought. Even...

FOX Broadcast Does Its Best To Not Jinx Rangers Pitcher’s No-Hitter

On Wednesday, Rangers pitcher Alexi Ogando made it to the sixth inning with a no-hitter going and FOX wasn’t going to risk jinxing it. When they flashed a graphic of the box score as they returned during the bottom of the sixth the local Fox affiliate folks put in there a very funny line saving them from some blame if Ogando were to lose it. Ogando of course went ahead and lost...

Rangers manager defends heavy use of Yu Darvish

Ron Washington was not about to question himself Friday over Yu Darvish's recent workload. Especially since Darvish felt fine after throwing a career-high 130 pitches Thursday night against the Detroit Tigers. The Texas manager had no qualms about sending his ace back to the mound in the eighth inning against the Detroit Tigers even though the Rangers had a 10-4 lead. '...

Soto's smash sends Verlander to the showers

ARLINGTON, Texas Geovany Soto's three-run homer Thursday off Detroit ace Justin Verlander is one he will tell his grandkids about. Just ask him. "Hell, yeah," Soto said. "No, but it felt good. Spending so much time in the National League, you only get to see these guys on TV. Once you get to face them, you're like, "Wow!" It felt good." It...

Ian Kinsler with worst head-first slide in baseball history, tries to eat base

Somebody needs to help Ian Kinsler out with his sliding form, because this head-first gem isn't right at all.

Foxy baseball fans in disguise

Astros 4, Pirates 2(11)

Jason Castro led off the 11th inning with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a close play at the plate as the Houston Astros topped the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 on Saturday night. Castro doubled off the top of the center-field fence against Bryan Morris (1-2), and Carlos Pena was intentionally walked one out later. The runners moved up on a wild pitch and Castro scored when he...

Pirates 5, Astros 4

Jimmy Paredes dropped Russell Martin's bases-loaded fly ball when he collided with second baseman Jake Elmore with two outs in the ninth inning, the second missed catch by a Houston right fielder, and the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the Astros 5-4 Friday night. Down 4-1, Pittsburgh started its comeback in the sixth when Chris Carter, usually a designated hitter, dropped...

Game 2013.41: Tigers at Rangers

23-17, 2nd place, .5 games behind Cle (won earlier today) Wow, what a game last night. Spectacular effort by Porcello (that’s now 24 Ks in his last 25 IPs – 3.24 ERA and a .96 WHIP…pretty salty), and the bullpen was almost as good. Luckily, I was at a graduation celebration last night and didn’t have to stomach Valverde in the 9th. Kudos to those of you who stuck it out....
