With the midnight non-tender deadline fast approaching, I'll update this post through the night as we figure out who the Pirates do and don't offer contracts to. We already know that Jose Veras has been traded to the Brewers for Casey McGehee, who will presumably be tendered. We also know that the Pirates signed Jason Grilli to a one-year/$1.1 million deal. Grilli, you'll recall, was pretty excellent for the Pirates after the Phillies were forced to release him in July when they didn't promote him to the Majors. He was recovering from a knee injury that forced him to miss all of 2010. Assuming Grilli stays healthy (he's 35 now, so this is a bit of a concern), getting a reliever that can strike out more than a hitter an inning for $1.1 million is a pretty solid deal for the Pirates.

Pirates Still Interested in Derrek Lee
The Pittsburgh Pirates are still interested in Derrek Lee for first base, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. Lee was offered arbitration last month, but turned down that offer a week ago to pursue free agency. He is believed to be waiting for the top options on the board to sign, hoping that will improve his market. Albert Pujols signed last week with the Los Angeles Angels, which...

Pirates, Jason Grilli agree to terms on a $1.1MM deal for 2011, I have learned.

Sack is back.
Jason Grilli posted a 2.48 ERA over 32.2 innings last season. He struck out 37 and walked 15. This deal will avoid the Bucs taking Grilli to arbitration.
Pirates Face Decisions as Arbitration Deadline Looms
2011: 32.2 IP, 2.48 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 37K, 15BB
Grilli was solid after joining the Pirates from the Phillies' AAA affiliate for 28 games last season. In 32 innings, Grilli posted a 2.48 ERA with a 1.19 WHIP in Pittsburgh. At 34, Grilli would be a good player to keep around and mentor some of the Pirates' younger bullpen arms. Like the others, he wouldn't command much...
The Buccos Are Looking Good
I know I write a lot about the Pittsburgh Pirates on this site but I find them really interesting. The Pirates have had a loosing record in each of the seasons I have been alive but they are starting to turn it around. Through savvy personnel decisions on a mostly small scale, Pittsburgh has positioned themselves, if a lot goes right, to actually win more than 81 games this season...

Analyzing the Non-Tender Deadline
The Pittsburgh Pirates had a somewhat busy day today. They swapped arbitration eligible players with the Milwaukee Brewers, reached a pre-arbitration deal with Jason Grilli, non-tendered Pedro Ciriaco and Jason Jaramillo, and tendered offers to the rest of the players who were without contracts in 2012.
In the biggest move of the day, the Pirates traded Jose Veras to the Milwaukee...
