Ah, those glorious dog days. Pitchers are tired, the air provides fly balls with that extra kick, and suddenly, home runs start flying, especially at parks like Yankee Stadium. Usually, they come in August. But we had our first such experience of the 2012 season on June 20, and the results were not pretty for Phil Hughes. The Braves took full advantage of his propensity for the gopher ball, ending his recent run of success by driving four of their six hits into the crowd, handing the Yankees a second consecutive loss and their first negative series of the month with a 10-5 victory. Hughes struck out five and walked none in his 4.1 innings of work, but 83 pitches in that span in 100-degree heat was enough labor for the day. Cody Eppley got his three men out, and Clay Rapada struck out all four he faced, but Cory Wade, Boone Logan and Freddy Garcia combined to let the Braves break open a 6-5 game in the last three innings.
