Lady At The Bat:
I've heard that, in Japan, the number 18 jersey is reserved for a team's ace pitcher. In Spring Training this year, when Hiroki Kuroda requested to wear the number, I thought he was taking an awful lot for granted. After all, he was far from being the Yankees' ace.Fast forward five months later to last night. Kuroda took a no-hitter into the 7th inning. He gave up only 2 hits en route to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Texas Rangers, a team with what might be the most potent lineup in all of baseball.Kuroda has come such a long way from his dreadful start to the season, one that I, for one, never thought he would fully overcome. I thought he would pitch better but, not this much better. In his last 10 starts he is 5-1 with a 2.42 ERA. Couple this with Sabathia's injuries and the inconsistency of guys like Hughes and Nova, and Kuroda emerges as a constant. A go-to guy. The ace.So this Japanese custom of the ace wearing number 18 is perfectly suitable right now. Hiroki...

Does anyone else find Yankees pitching prospect David Phelps’ story eerily familiar?
Phil Hughes; April 29, 2008 at Yankee Stadium.
Getting tossed around like a rag doll between the rotation, bullpen and minors all season.
Not be allotted the chance to settle into a roll.
Pre-set pitching/innings limit.
Getting stretched multiple times as a starter.
Excuse me, as the above...
With Alex Rodriguez on the DL, Eric Chavez has filled the void by outshining the former star in front of him.
When a key position player player goes down with an injury, it usually sends managers scrambling to fill the void immediately, so they seek help from their bench, farm system, or possible trades. Replacing a high caliber player isn’t always the easiest task and the same...
We didn't have to pay $51 million for the rights just to negotiate with Hiroki Kuroda. And his final bill won't cost us $110 million. Gotta give Brian Cashman credit there. When you look at Texas, sometimes you see the Yankees under Steinbrenner in the early 1980s. They have the best lineup in baseball, and they chase every star who comes available - Yu Darvish, Roy Oswalt...

Derek Lowe spent his weekend thinking about how exciting it was going to be to get back on a major league mound after agreeing to terms with the New York Yankees. On Monday, he got that chance. Lowe pitched four scoreless innings to close out the Yankees' 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers, picking up his first save since 2001. "You just keep going, and every inning, they...
Texas Rangers 2 — New York Yankees 3
Josh Hamilton’s one-man offense was not enough in the 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers.
Freddy Garcia went 6.2 strong innings and allowed 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 6. The Rangers scored off the bat of just one batter, Josh Hamilton. He took Garcia deep for a home run in the 4th inning and an even deeper home run in the 6th inning...

NEW YORK (AP) -- Freddy Garcia worked around two homers by Josh Hamilton to remain undefeated against Texas for eight years and the New York Yankees beat the Rangers for the third straight night, 3-2 on Wednesday.

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees have followed a consistent formula in turning their showdown series against the Texas Rangers into a chance at a four-game sweep. Nick Swisher again had a big hit, Freddy Garcia gave the Yankees another strong start and Eric Chavez continued his hot hitting as the Yankees beat the Rangers 3-2 in a game delayed one hour and 45 minutes by rain Wednesday...
