It started when Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Nyjer Morgan appeared on Jim Rome is Burning during the baseball season wearing a personalized San Jose Sharks sweater bearing the name of his alter ego “Tony Plush.” And on Wednesday, Morgan got the chance to join the Sharks for their morning practice during which he showed off some impressive moves for a baseball player.

Morgan, a Bay Area native, has been a devout Sharks fan since their inception in 1991. He grew up playing hockey along with baseball and even played seven games in Western Hockey League, a major junior hockey circuit in Canada, scoring two goals and earning 20 penalty minutes, before deciding on pursuing a career on the diamond.

Morgan, 31, called Wednesday a “dream come true.”

“To be out there to skate with my childhood team, and just to be out there with the boys, was an unbelievable feeling,” Morgan said.

Wearing the same “Plush” No. 2 black sweater he wore on Rome, Morgan participated in drills with Sharks players, even scoring a goal against goalie Thomas Greiss in a shootout competition:

Morgan’s first shot went wide right, and Greiss stopped his next two. On his final attempt, Morgan put the puck in the net — an apparent parting gift from Greiss — and raised his stick in celebration.

Sharks captain Joe Thornton liked what he saw.

“He’s actually a pretty good skater, believe it or not,” Thornton said. “He took a couple of strong strides. Him being an outfielder, I think he can get around pretty good. I’m not sure how sturdy he is on his skates, though. … I’d give him a B-plus to be honest with you. I was impressed with how good he was.”
