The resurgent A's beat the Detroit Tigers for the second night in a row Tuesday taking a rain-shorted 6-3 decision at Comerica Park in a game called after five and one-half innings. Facing Justin Verlander who beat them twice in the American League Division Series last year the A's scored twice in the first then after falling behind 3-2 tied the game in the third and took the lead on a two-run Brandon Moss homer in the fifth. The A's added a run in the sixth on Seth Smith's first homer in 40 games off Detroit reliever Bruce Rondon then loaded the bases on two singles and a walk before the umpires called a halt to play. Unlike in previous incarnations of Verlander the A's got to him quickly. Coco Crisp walked Josh Donaldson singled and after a Verlander wild pitch Jed Lowrie's no-man's land double down the right field line made it 2-0. The A's made Verlander throw 44 pitches in the inning and probably should have scored more but left two men on. The Tigers were all over A's starter Tommy Milone in the first with Milone unable to find the strike zone with a GPS system. He began the game going walk single walk then saw Prince Fielder deliver a two-run game-tying single. To that point Milone had thrown 17 pitches only six of those were strikes and two of the six were hits. But he got better even though a two-out error at second base by Alberto Callaspo gave the Tigers the lead at 3-2. Milone pitched through the fifth inning allowing just one more hit and one more walk and by the time the rains came he not only had his control back — he'd thrown 84 pitches 46 of which were strikes — but he had the lead back too. Moss drew a two-out walk off Verlander in the third and Yoenis Cespedes first narrowly missed a homer down the right field line then changed directions with a double into the left field corner to bring Moss home with the tying run.
