So far the big news out the A’s offseason has been the signing of versatile veteran infielder Nick Punto. Note the keyword there being “versatile.” Billy Beane’s newest market inefficiency over the past few seasons has been targeting players that have the ability to step into multiple roles to help the A’s. All you have to do is look at the 2013 roster to know that is true. Brandon Moss: First base and outfield Eric Sogard: Second base and shortstop Jed Lowrie: Second base and shortstop (and third base in a pinch) Josh Donaldson: Third Base and catcher Alberto Callaspo: Second base, shortstop, third base The list goes on… So the signing of Punto to a one-year deal with an option for 2015 does not really surprise me. He is capable of adequately filling in at second, shortstop or third base and he gives the A’s some added depth and flexibility if they decide to move any of the current middle infield options.
