Brandon Moss made a costly two-base error on a hit by Josh Hamilton in the first inning Tuesday, but he more than made up for it later as the Oakland A's edged the Texas Rangers 3-2 in 10 innings. An misplay by Moss in right field led to two unearned runs off Tommy Milone, the only runs the A's left-hander allowed in six innings. Moss erased thoughts of that blunder in the seventh, though, when with two out and the bases loaded, he made a sensational over-the-shoulder catch on the warning track, robbing Elvis Andrus of extra bases and multiple RBI and keeping the game tied 2-2. The A's went on to win it on George Kottaras' solo homer to right off Mark Lowe in the 10th. Oakland's defense had been poor lately, particularly at first base, where both Moss and Chris Carter have made costly errors in eventual one-run losses. On Tuesday, the Athletics' top defensive first baseman, Daric Barton -- called up only when Class AAA Sacramento's playoff run was over -- was at first, with Carter at designated hitter and Moss in right, taking Josh Reddick's usual spot. Barton made several good plays at first base, and he drove in Oakland's first run with a double. Carter accounted for the second run with a homer to left in the fourth. Reddick, who entered the night in an 0-for-27 slump, wasn't in the starting lineup. An addition consideration beyond his recent hitting woes was that the A's right fielder was 0-for-8 with six strikeouts against scheduled Texas starter Yu Darvish. When Darvish was scratched with neck stiffness, manager Bob Melvin contemplated a new lineup but stuck with his original group, keeping Reddick -- the team's top homer and RBI man -- on the bench for a much-needed rest, and putting Moss in right. Reddick pinch-hit in the eighth inning with a man in scoring position and lined out.
