OAKLAND -- The surprising Oakland A's are surging toward the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Boston Red Sox are closing out a disappointing season in freefall mode for the second consecutive year. Two teams heading in different directions opened a series Friday night at the Coliseum, and the A's obliterated the Red Sox 20-2. "Based on where we've been this season, the offense has been pretty good the last couple of months and certainly here during this stretch, so I don't know if I can ask for much more than 20 runs," A's manager Bob Melvin said. Much of the damage came from three players who began their major league careers with the Red Sox. George Kottaras, Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss combined to go 9-for-15 with four homers, 13 RBI and nine runs. Kottaras had career highs with two home runs and five RBI in Oakland's highest-scoring game in nearly 12 years. "My priority is my defense and going out there for the pitchers," the cat...

Andrew Bailey Surprised by Athletics' Success After Team Cleaned House Over Offseason

Andrew Bailey sensed the beginning of a rebuilding movement. When the Athletics shipped out him, Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill in separate deals over the offseason, it was a questionable move. For a team that finished third in the AL West in 2011, the Athletics stunned many by dealing three of their All-Star pitchers. But Oakland general manager Billy Beane had a vision for the...

Athletics 20, Red Sox 2

Brandon Moss had career highs of four hits, four RBIs and four runs, Josh Reddick hit his first career grand slam, and the Oakland Athletics routed the Boston Red Sox 20-2 on Friday night to match their best winning streak of the season at seven. Josh Donaldson homered for the third straight game with a two-run shot and Moss also had a two-run drive to go with a pair of RBI doubles...

Daisuke Matsuzaka's Sharp Return Earns Him Amica Pitcher of the Week Honors

Daisuke Matsuzaka still has something in that right arm of his. He showed as much Monday, going seven scoreless innings in a start that was just as impressive for what it contained as it was for how quickly Matsuzaka worked throughout it. He gave up just five hits while striking out six, nabbing a win in his most recent return from the disabled list. Matsuzaka had tried to come back...

Red Sox Commitment to 'Discipline' Won't Keep Ben Cherington From Being Aggressive in Offseason

It's been exactly one year since the Red Sox September freefall. Managers, general managers, pitching coaches and players have changed over that span, but the subpar results remain the same for the Red Sox. Since they are out of the playoff race, they'll spend this September assessing the young talent on their hands. Rosters expand on Saturday, meaning there may be a few...

Athletics 7, Red Sox 1

OAKLAND, Calif. -- It doesn't matter who the opponent is. The Oakland Athletics are rolling like a runaway freight train and the win streak continues. The A's scored four runs in the third inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Brandon Inge, as Oakland recorded its eighth straight win by beating the Boston Red Sox 7-1 on Saturday night. Coco Crisp was a triple shy...

Athletics 12, Indians 7

Jarrod Parker pitched into the sixth inning and Oakland hit four home runs, leading the Athletics to their sixth straight win, a 12-7 victory over the free-falling Cleveland Indians on Thursday and a sweep of the four-game series. Oakland, which has won eight of nine, maintained its one-game lead over Baltimore for the top spot in the AL wild card race. George Kottaras' three...

Red Sox Schedule Gives Team Great Chance at Playing Spoiler for Surprising Athletics, Orioles (Video)

Last year, September was not kind to the Red Sox, as the team sputtered down the stretch and missed out on the playoffs thanks to a loss to Baltimore on the final day of the regular season. With the Red Sox out of contention this time around, they find themselves in a position to play the spoiler to another team's playoff hopes, similar to how the Orioles did last year. The irony...

Daily Fantasy Baseball must starts: Thursday August 30th

Playoffs are the goal for MLB teams, but fantasy baseball owners need to look outside of the race for the postseason today for production. Value plays: Scott Podsednik – There are very rarely players ranked this low that have a tremendous track record against a very god pitcher, and I encourage you to take advantage in daily [...]

Dustin Pedroia, Josh Reddick the Hot Hitters as A's, Red Sox Prepare for Rematch

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. "Hot" is a relative term coming into Saturday's game between the Red Sox and A's, with Boston's hottest hitter, Dustin Pedroia, paling in comparison to Oakland's Josh...

A smaller 18th green at TPC Boston

The latest tweak by Gil Hanse at the TPC Boston was to the 18th green, which has proven to be pivotal in recent years. It's where Chris Stroud hit a 3-iron to 3 feet last year for eagle to narrowly advance to the next round in the FedEx Cup playoffs, and where Ernie Els and Geoff Ogilvy both got up-and-down from behind the green for birdie to advance. This year, the par-5 closing...

Review of an Incredible, and Not-Quite Finished, Mariners Season

The Oakland Athletics began the 2012 season with Billy Beane’s typical group of young rookies and veteran misfits.  But unlike previous seasons, Beane spent money for the longterm.  He added slugging YouTube sensation and recent Cuban defector, Yoenis Cespedes to a four-year, $36 million deal; retained Coco Crisp on a three-year, $21 million deal; and signed former American League...

Sox lose again, get swept in the season series vs the Angels

To all those that decided to go to sleep, you made the right decision. You didn't miss much anyways. The Angels were able to get another early lead on Jon Lester and they come away with a much needed sweep, beating the Sox 5-2. Both starting pitchers were shaky tonight, the main difference was that Lester couldn't get out of jams and Zack Grienke could. Lester gave up...
