Bobby Valentine and Robin Ventura played a part when Octavio Dotel got his first postseason win in 1999. Now Valentine and Ventura will manage against Dotel in his first season with the Tigers. On Oct. 17, 1999, Valentine was managing the Mets in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against Atlanta. For the top of the 13th inning, he summoned Dotel as his ninth pitcher of the game.

Detroit Tigers hot stove: Yoennis Cespedes and Daniel Murphy
This MLB offseason has had a very choppy feel to it for both the Detroit Tigers and the rest of the league. Teams appear to be showing great patience and the willingness to perform their due diligence before committing to a player. But once they finally commit, the action is hot and heavy, and not happening cheaply.

Changing numbers could be costly decision for players
Not many baseball players change their uniform numbers during the season.
In fact, the only player I can remember recently changing his number during the season is Gerald Laird, who went from No. 8 to No. 12 in 2010 with the Detroit Tigers. And the only reason I remember that is because I'm a Tigers fan and watch almost all of their games.

Will Rhymes Non-tendered
The Tigers will not be offering a contract to second baseman Will Rhymes before tonight's deadline and will instead allow him to become a free agent. Rhymes surprised many with his solid play late in 2010 and won the starting second base job coming out of spring training this year. Unfortunately, he batted .235/.323/.271 and was sent to Toledo after just 85 at bats. ...

WTF: Beckett is mad at Kevin Long?
From Kevin Kernan:Boston ace Josh Beckett, who always seems to be upset about something, is ticked off at Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long for mentioning that Beckett takes too long between pitches, which can throw off the rhythm of the hitter.
That was the word from new Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine in comments made Saturday at the Red Sox “Christmas at Fenway’’ event...
Closing options for Sox
Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington is prepared to go into spring training not knowing for sure who his closer will be. That may sound risky for a team with championship aspirations, but Cherington has faith in the options he will present to manager Bobby Valentine
