The Astros may have had the same record as the Pirates heading into last night’s game but come on, it’s the Astros – they. are. terrible. And coming from a bunch of Bucco fans, that’s saying something.
The Astros have somehow put together a decent offense and pitching staff that both rank in the top 15 – think of how much better the Bucs’ record would look if they weren’t dead last in runs scored. Well, the embarrassing offense was at it again in the series’ opening game and the Pirates got shut out 1-0 by the team that will most likely end the year in the NL Central basement.
Bud Norris pitched the game of his life against the Buccos, striking out eight and only giving three hits over six innings. He was perfect through the first three, which is all the Astros needed to score the winning run. After back-to-back singles to open the second, Pedro Alvarez started a nice looking 5-4-3 double play that allowed a run to score…the game’s only run.

When Astro manager elected to replace starting pitcher Wandy Rodriguez after eight innings of three hit ball to go with his closer, Brett Myers to close the game in Pittsburgh on Sunday he was doing what most major league managers would do.

Houston Astros Top Pick In MLB Draft: Byron Buxton or Mark Appel
While the Houston Astros quietly continue to play above their heads in 2012, the future of their rebuilding process earns a face on June 4th. Major League Baseball‘s Draft occurs two weeks from Monday and the top selection remains a mystery. Schafer becoming base-stealing threat for Astros
For all that's been made of how Jordan Schafer fits into the Astros' new patience
profile of higher walk and strikeout totals, there's another element of the game that he
adds to a team with little. In replacing Michael Bourn, whom he was traded for, Schafer
provides one of the few significant base-stealing threats on the roster. Through the Astros' 1-0 victory...

Lowrie enjoying healthy start to season
Entering the 2012 season, oft-injured Houston Astros shortstop Jed Lowrie hadn't appeared in more than 88 major league games in a season. But he has remained healthy thus far, and the Stanford product is batting .301 with a .387 on-base percentage and some power.
Bring on the Astros
I said before this series started that I wanted to see the Pirates go at least 6-3. They need a sweep of the Astros to get there. Bud Norris goes for the Astros against the recently excellent James McDonald. First pitch tonight is at 7:05.
MLB Insiders: Houston Astros
The Pirates open a three-game series with the Houston Astros on Friday night at PNC Park. Right-hander James McDonald will pitch for the Bucs. The Astros will toss righty Bud Norris.
5/11 Recap | Astros 1 Pirates 0
Pittsburgh failed to score any runs tonight and were shutout by Bud Norris and the Houston Astros on a final score of 1-0. Norris only allowed three hits through six innings and the Pirates would go on to get only four all together. James McDonald started for the Pirates and looked outstanding. He pitched eight strong innings allowing only one run on four hits and struck out eight...

Pirates waste J-Mac’s fabulous start
Final: Astros 1, Pirates 0
WP: Bud Norris (3-1, 3.95 ERA)
LP: James McDonald (2-2, 2.42 ERA)
SV: Brett Myers (9, 0.77 ERA)
James McDonald was spectacular. The rest of the Pirates, not so much.
After giving up a run in the 2nd inning, McDonald cruised through the rest of his start as he struck out eight Astros in eight innings while giving up just four hits and two walks.
In the 6th...
Frustration defined
It would be hard to dream up a more irritating loss than this one. The Pirates got another great effort from James McDonald, but failed to give him a single run of support and lost 1-0.
J-Mac was excellent yet again, continuing his recent string of strong outings. He went 8 innings, struck out 8, and allowed just 4 hits. Houston scratched out a run in the second inning without the...
