The Sports Jags:
San Diego Padres
If you didn’t get to catch last night’s game, consider yourself lucky. Oh sure, the Pirates started out looking just fine when James McDonald settled down after he gave up a lead-off home run to the Padres, but even though the Bucco Bats gave J-Mac a 6-run lead to work with after four innings, he pissed it all away in the 9-8 loss and cost the Bucs a much-needed win.
The Padres were riding a 4-game winning streak but they’re still 14 games below .500 and the sixth worst team in the majors. The Pirates needed to take at least 2 of 3 with the Reds slumping to make a run at first in the NL Central. Last night looked like a lock when Garrett Jones hit a BUSHES shot in the third, Travis Snider hit his first homer as a Bucco - a 3-run shot in the fourth – and Pedro Alvarez drove in 2 four batters later to put the Buccos up 7-1. They chased starter Edison Volquez after just 3.1.
Too bad J-Mac was worse. Who the hell knows what happened to him over the All-Star break but something needs to happen. He either needs to have a nice long sit down with AJ Burnett and get right or Clint Hurdle needs to give him a break – and we’re not just talking a spot start by Kevin Correia to bump the rotation back a day. J-Mac has completely lost his curve ball and he got pounded in the fifth inning last night. He was giving up walks, singles, double, homers…you name it. In a matter of minutes, J-Mac took a guaranteed win and turned it into a 7-7 tie.
He should’ve gotten the L regardless but Rod Barajas got J-Mac off the hook with an RBI single in the sixth but Chase Headley’s 2-run homer (his second of the night – he finished with 2 HR, 5 RBI) in the seventh gave the Padres the lead and the win because Huston Street is automatic in save situations (0.75 ERA, 21 SV, 0 BS). The only good thing for the Bucs was that Street looked like he pulled a hammy covering first to end the game…we’ll see what happens with him today.
Thank god Burnett is going tonight because when the Bucs need a win, he’s their go-to man, and Jason Marquis has given up 18 runs over his last four starts. The Reds won last night so the Bucs needs these next two games. Hey, it can’t get any worse than last night.

James McDonald has struggled the second half of the season. The McDonald that Pittsburgh saw in the first half of the season was impressive. He entered the break with just a 2.37 ERA and looked to be the club’s ace of the staff. His evolution drew so much attention that some were surprised he wasn’t chosen to pitch in the All-Star game for the National League...
Jeff Locke was impressive in his 2012 debut for the Pirates on Thursday at PNC Park. The left-hander, who was recalled on Wednesday, was promoted to serve the club with length from the bullpen — a role that he’s never been called upon to do in his professional career.
But the 24-year-old looked nothing like a rookie on the mound in Pittsburgh.
“I think there’s nerves anytime...

It still counts.
Justin Wilson pitched a no-hitter.
Even though the game was cut short, after 7.5 innings due to a thunderstorm, Justin Wilson still gets to count this game as a no-hitter.
Wilson pitched eight no-hit innings, including one in the pouring rain, before the game was halted. In fact, he simply mowed down the...

Should the Pirates call up Gerrit Cole in September?
In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays had a surprising season, much like the Pittsburgh Pirates are having in 2012. The Rays went from worst to first, winning the highly competitive AL East in the process. Along the way they promoted top prospect David Price, who was taken with the first overall pick one year earlier. Fast forward to 2012...
I have been pretty brutal in my thoughts about the Pirates offense this year. I have checked in several times in several different ways to note that the offense came out of the gate in a putrid way. Six weeks in I was nothing short of convinced that the slow start the offense had was going to plague the club, resulting in yet another bad season. I’m happy to say that I was wrong...

Based on how they've performed at PNC Park coupled with San Diego's play on the road, the Pittsburgh Pirates should be able to end their lengthy home losing streak to the Padres.
Of course, if scheduled starter James McDonald's struggles continue, another defeat could be imminent.
McDonald again hopes to break out of his second-half funk and help the Pirates avoid losing...
Clint Barmes' first career grand slam keyed a nine-run fourth inning and Neil Walker went 5 for 5 as the Pittsburgh Pirates rallied past the San Diego Padres 11-5 on Sunday.
Walker homered and doubled as the Pirates overcame an early 5-0 deficit and ended San Diego's six-game winning streak. The Padres had won 11 in a row at Pittsburgh dating to 2009.
Andrew McCutchen and...

We also have one trade of note and John Fredland, in his Jolly Roger Rewind, takes a look at an extra innings affair from 35 years ago against the Cubs.
On this date in 1971, the Pirates...
