The Pirates are 10-8. They're hitting the ball well and besides uneven starting pitching, playing a brand of baseball that I think we can fairly call "very good" over the last two weeks. They're coming off of a 7-2 homestand against the Reds, Cardinals, and Braves. Still, it feels like they're stuck in a sort of no man's land right now. Francisco Liriano is about 10 days away from re-joining the rotation, Charlie Morton is probably somewhere between two and three weeks off, and Gerrit Cole's ETA of early June has been put into question by his wild start with Indianapolis. Those three represent the Pirates' best chance to add arms to the rotation; until they're ready, Jonathan Sanchez, James McDonald, and Jeff Locke will continue to take 60% of the Pirates' starts. The team has managed to weather that to this point, but how long can a team win a majority of its games when its bullpen is called into serious action every night? That's w...

Brandon Inge Activated and Starting at Third Tonight

Brandon Inge has been activated from the DL and is starting at third tonight. The Pittsburgh Pirates have activated third baseman Brandon Inge, and have him in tonight’s lineup at third base. Inge was recently on a rehab assignment in Indianapolis, batting for a .150/.320/.283 line in 60 at-bats. The Pirates are going up against left-hander Cole Hamels tonight. Inge has done well...

The Bullpen Didn’t Need Burnett’s Control Issues

A.J. Burnett struggled with his control tonight, leading to more innings from the bullpen. Looking at the stat line, A.J. Burnett didn’t have a terrible start. He gave up just two runs on five hits and three walks in five innings, while striking out seven. Looking beyond the stats, that start was definitely not what the Pirates needed right now. The bullpen is currently over-worked...

Having recovered from a fracture in his right scapula, looke for him to play as a utility infielder. Fantasy Ramifications: Neither player holds any fantasy baseball value in 2013. The post Pittsburgh Pirates...

First Pitch: These Pirates Are Good, But…

In tonight’s game story, James Santelli broke down the great homestand the Pirates just had, and how impressive it was that they beat three teams who look like they’ll be heading to the playoffs this year. I thought about following up on that by looking back at what I’ve said over the last two years when the Pirates started to look promising. There have been times in each of...

Pirates Shut Out Phillies 2-0 as Pitching Continues to Thrive

If Jeff Locke was pitching to save his spot in the rotation… he is well on his way. Jeff Locke kept the Phillies scoreless for six innings. Locke put together the best start of his brief Major League career Tuesday night to tack on another outing to a strong run of Pirates’ pitching. After some early hiccups, Locke recorded outs on the last eight hitters he faced, then turned...

Game 20: Pirates 2 Braves 0

Of course Brandon Inge would be the player to get the key RBI double in this game. Of course he'd be the one to turn in two stellar plays at third base to keep the Phillies off of the board with the Pirates clinging to a 1-0 lead and the Phillies threatening. Of course that's how it was going to happen after me and most Pirate fans and bloggers spent a good part of the afternoon...

Mazzaro steps up in Bucs bullpen

Righty Vin Mazzaro was selected from Indy on April 16 and joined the Pirates bullpen. Mazzaro, who's started 45 of his 69 games in the majors, was one of the last cuts in spring training camp. Mazzaro has made three appearances and has not allowed a run. PiratesDugout.com's George Von Benko caught up with Mazzaro recently.

Pirates 2, Phillies 0

Jeff Locke pitched six innings of two-hit ball and Gaby Sanchez homered off Cole Hamels to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Philadelphia Phillies 2-0 on Tuesday night. Locke (2-1) struck out six and walked two. After wriggling out of a jam in the fourth, he retired his last eight batters - striking out three of the final four. Sanchez also doubled and Brandon Inge had an RBI...

Phillies 3, Pirates 2

The Pirates’ momentum (and/or luck) ran out on Monday night, as the Phillies surprisingly outpitched them and were able to pull off a narrow one-run victory. The Bucs fall to 10-9 and now face an uphill climb for the rest of this four game set on the other side of the state. Over the weekend against the Braves, the Pirates won a couple of games in which the pitching matchup didn’t...

Hamels Tough Luck Loser, Phillies Bats in Locke-down

In what was one of the more miserable games of the season, the Phillies fell to the Pirates, 2-0. Hamels Moves to 0-3: -Just call it the Curse of Cliff. When your starting pitcher throws well enough that he should have a victory. Cole was pretty much on his game from the start, except for mistakes to Brandon Inge and Gaby Sanchez that hurt him. Hamels has gotten better every start...

Pirates 4, Braves 2

What a homestand! The Pirates were somehow able to patch together a victory on Sunday afternoon, wrapping up an excellent series win over Atlanta. It was certainly a messy game, but that won’t stop any Bucco fan from being thrilled with the outcome. The main reason today’s win was so big was the pitching matchup. It was Jonathan Sanchez (ERA north of 12) against Kris Medlen ...
