You can hear Coleman describe how the whole Stadium was on their feet cheering for Yastrzemski. The score was only 3-0 and a lead off hit would increase NY’s chance of victory, but Carl Yastrzemski made this diving somersaulting catch to preserve a no-hitter by 21 year old rookie Billy Rohr, making his first Big League appearance. That to the fans was worth cheering for.
Back then Rohr was making $8,000, and owner Tom Yawkey gave him a $1,000 bonus for that one game. Jackie Kennedy took her son John-John to get an autographed ball from Rohr and Yaz after the game. Ed Sullivan had him introduced on his Big Show that Sunday night.
The catch that Jackie Bradley Junior made was not as dramatic as Yastrzemski, but I did predict it would happen on March 11, 2013 when I wrote these words:
