Cubs win! The Cubs took an early lead on a first inning home run by Anthony Rizzo that still hasn't landed. Combine that with eight strong innings by Jeff Samardzija (two hits, one walk, 9 strikeouts) and it's a recipe for a Cubs win. Carlos Marmol made the end of the game interesting by doing Carlos Marmol things at the beginning of the ninth, but Sveum rightly pulled him and had James Russell and Kyuji Fujikawa shut the door on the Pirates. Per Sveum, Marmol is still the closer, but didn't have it today. Better go pick up Fyukikawa in your fantasy leagues if you haven't already. New Cub Nate Schierholtz reached base four times on a walk, hbp, error, and a single. Brent Lillibridge was not so lucky, going 0-3 with three strikeouts and a fielding error before being replaced by Alberto Gonzalez. Welington Castillo had a nice day with two doubles, mitigated by a dumb TOOTBLAN, even by the Cubs recent baserunning standards. Players of the Game Cubs: Jeff Samardzija (.3...

Chicago Cubs: Carlos Marmol to lose closer job already?

Carlos Marmol has been shaky throughout his seven years with the Chicago Cubs, but this would be a new depth to the craziness surrounding his career. On Opening Day on Monday, Marmol came on in the bottom of the ninth inning of a 3-0 game against the Pittsburgh Pirates and promptly imploded. Now, he could be out of a job. Marmol took over for starter Jeff Samardzija, and immediately...

Cubs' Samardzija, Pirates' Burnett ready to open

Jeff Samardzija can only hope his performance Monday matches his last opening game in Pittsburgh. Samardzija will start for the Chicago Cubs and A.J. Burnett for the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday as two teams with long streaks of futility meet on opening day. The Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and the Pirates haven't had a winning season since 1992. After losing...

Cubs 3, Pirates 1

Jeff Samardzija struck out nine in eight nearly flawless innings and the Chicago Cubs held on for a 3-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday. The right-hander allowed just two hits and walked one as the Chicago won on opening day for the first time since 2009. Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and Wellington Castillo added an RBI double for the Cubs. Kyuji Fujikawa got...

Game 1: Cubs 3 Pirates 1

The easiest and probably most accurate way to describe the Pirates' 3-1 loss to the Cubs on Opening Day at PNC Park is probably this: it was cold out and when it's cold out, hard-throwing pitchers seem to do well, and as a result AJ Burnett and Jeff Samardzija combined for 19 strikeouts between them in just 13 2/3 innings combined work.  Burnett was particularly awesome...

Burnett K’s 10 in Opening Day loss to Cubs

Final: Cubs 3, Pirates 1 (box) WP: Jeff Samardzija (1-0, 0.00 ERA) LP: A.J. Burnett (0-1, 4.76 ERA) SV: Kyuji Fujikawa (1, 0.00 ERA) A.J. Burnett struck out ten batters in his first career Opening Day start, but it wasn’t enough as the Cubs scored two runs in the first inning on an Anthony Rizzo home run and led the rest of the way. Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija gave up just two...
