PLAYERS: Josh Reddick
TEAMS: Boston Red Sox

Red_sox_vs_bbcf
The new regime in Boston made their first player move this week, dealing Josh Reddick and 2 minor leaguers to Oakland for two-time All-Star closer Andrew Bailey and versatile outfielder Ryan Sweeney.  Bailey has had some arm issues in the past, appearing in fewer games and throwing fewer innings with each successive season since his 2009 debut.  But when he has played he has been pretty much lights out, posting a sub-1.000 WHIP, a 206 ERA+, and a 3.55 K/BB over those 3 seasons. As for Sweeney, the 26-year old outfielder can apparently play all three OF positions well and has better offensive numbers pretty much across the board than the 24-year old Reddick (+35 points in BA and +52 points in OBP, though -38 points in SLG). While there is nothing earth-shattering here, and I don't know enough about the minor leaguers dealt to assess that portion of the deal, it would seem this is a pretty good move for Boston, with an apparent upgrade in the 3r...

Miles Head: Oakland-bound Prospect

With the trade of Andrew Bailey and Ryan Sweeney to Boston in exchange for Josh Reddick and a pair of minor leaguers, one of the questions A’s fans are asking is, “Who is Miles Head?” The short answer is that Head is a mid-level prospect who would have been ranked in the 15-20 range among Red Sox farmhands by most publications in the coming days. A more detailed description...

A’s Trade Bailey, Sweeney to Boston for Three

As was predicted by many, the A’s have sent All-Star closer Andrew Bailey to the Boston Red Sox. The A’s will also send outfielder Ryan Sweeney to Boston for a package that includes outfielder Josh Reddick, and prospects Miles Head and Raul Alcantara. Obviously trades are best judged a few years down the line but on the surface this looks like a clear win for the Red Sox to me...

Red Sox, Marlins Offseason Strategies Finally Demonstrating Impact of MLB's Luxury Tax

Hoping that the Red Sox are still looking to make another big move this offseason? Don't be surprised if they stand pat. The Red Sox made their biggest splash of the offseason on Wednesday when they landed closer Andrew Bailey in a deal for Josh Reddick and some minor league prospects. While many fans have clamored for more big moves from the Sox, there is no indication at the...

Reddick / Bailey Trade: Rapid Reaction

This looks like a trade where both players involved may be significantly worse than they’re perceived. Josh Reddick was a useful regular last year, but his overall track record remains terrible, and ZiPS projects him as basically a replacement level RF with an 85 OPS+. Andrew Bailey is a fabulous pitcher when healthy (career 2.07 ERA and 2.74 FIP), but he’s pitched a full...

Red Sox swap Reddick for Bailey and Sweeney

In the continuing the process of rebuilding their bullpen, the Boston Red Sox have finally gotten their man, acquiring Andrew Bailey from the Oakland Athletics along with versatile outfielder Ryan Sweeney for right fielder Josh Reddick and two minor leaguers. The Red Sox have been pursuing Bailey since the Winter Meetings and after going down the wire with Oakland for Gio Gonzalez...

The Red Sox Trade For Andrew Bailey: Good or Bad Move?

The Boston Red Sox are clearly thinking Daniel Bard will move to the rotation, and they shored up their bullpen even more by trading for Oakland A’s closer Andrew Bailey. Bailey will come to Boston for outfielder Josh Reddick, and frankly- great move. When healthy, Andrew Bailey is one of the best in the game and the Red Sox had some major problems with their bullpen at different...

Report: Red Sox Acquire Closer Andrew Bailey, Ryan Sweeney From Oakland in Exchange for Josh Reddick, Prospects

There is finally a resolution to the Red Sox's closing vacancy. On Wednesday, the team acquired closer Andrew Bailey from the Athletics in exchange for outfielder Josh Reddick and prospects Miles Head and Raul Alcantera, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney. The Red Sox also received outfielder Ryan Sweeney in the deal. Bailey, 27, is a two-time American League All-Star and...

Flotsam and Jetsam

Miscellaneous thoughts and observations.I am a big fan of Josh Reddick. I thought he was going to be the starting RF in 2012 for the Red Sox. I also think his late season drop-off probably had a lot do do with his injured wrist. Having said that - really like the trade for Andrew Bailey. He becomes the closer and lets Daniel Bard become a starter. The one thing I'm not so hot...

Kalish won’t be ready to start

The Red Sox need a right fielder. J.D. Drew is a free agent and will not be returning after five years in Boston. Josh Reddick, who held the job while Drew was on the disabled list last season, was traded to Oakland Wednesday.
