Dickey looking to become first 10-game winner

Power pitcher versus revitalized knuckleballer.

Lefty versus rightly.

Youngster in his prime versus veteran finding a second wind.

The list goes on an on.

David Price was supposed to be here. Selected first in the draft in 2007, he has become the ace everyone thought he could be. He started the All-Star Game in 2010 and finished second in the Cy Young voting. He may find himself atop the hill at the midsummer classic as this year’s American League starter. Currently, he stands alone with the most wins to this point. The twenty-six year old Price boasts an 8-3 mark and a nifty 2.40 ERA for the Rays. He’s struck out 70 while walking 27 and giving up 69 hits in 78.2 innings. Good. Not R.A. Dickey good.

Dickey, on the other hand, was not such a sure bet for league leader in 2012. Dickey will oppose Price on Wednesday at Tropicana Field, marking only the second time since interleague play began that the league leaders in wins had their teams face one another. The 37 year-old knuckleballer is looking to be the first in the bigs to reach double-digit wins. He’s 9-1 with a 2.44 ERA. R.A. has surrendered just 65 hits in 81 innings. Even more remarkable, he’s retired 78 batters on strikeouts while walking only 19 — crazy numbers for a pitcher whose predominant pitch can be deadly effective but often equally difficult to control. His journey to this point (which we’ve recently detailed) is what makes the story that much better.

It’s a tailor-made story for today’s media. The match up is intriguing across so many fronts. Best in the bigs. Divergent paths to this spot. Opposites on paper. Oh yea, and the two happen to share agents, Tennessee roots and a friendship. Should be fun to watch. Dickey is still the man. Let’s do this, Metros.
