Found December 20, 2013 on Indians Baseball Insider:
It may have taken some time, but it appears as if the Indians' offseason plans are finally becoming a bit clearer. During the past week, we've seen the Indians sign John Axford, Shaun Marcum and trade Drew Stubbs to acquire Josh Outman. None of these moves could be described as big acquisitions, but it does at least signal that the Indians are trying to address their concerns and get... better. Better — that's an interesting word to consider. The Indians won 92 games last season and also earned one of the American League's Wild Card berths. Knowing that, it's not going to be that easy for the team to get much better; it's very difficult to win much more than 92 games in a season. So let's consider that word one more time. Has this team actually positioned itself to be better in 2014? Offensively, it looks as if that may be the case. A platoon of David Murphy and Ryan Raburn will now replace Stubbs in right field. Murphy is coming off a rough 2013 campaign...

MLB News: Indians designate prospect Trey Haley for assignment

Pitching prospect Trey Haley was designated for assignment on Thursday by the Cleveland Indians to clear room for the official signing of new closer John Axford. It was clear over the past few days that some 40-man roster move had to be made to clear the necessary space. Last Friday’s acquisition of David Adams completed the roster. This week’s swap of Drew Stubbs for Josh Outman...

Outman in — Tribe bullpen takes shape before calendar turns

It is not sexy. It is not a needle moving addition. But the Indians got better yesterday. A surplus of right field options has spawned a plugging of another hole. A bullpen gutted by free agent turnover looks as though it has been completely remade.  But will this group come together and be as good as they look on paper? The addition of David Murphy made last year’s regular right...

Asdrubal Cabrera, plate discipline, and bouncing back

Asdrubal Cabrera was an All-Star in 2011 and 2012, yet when Cleveland finally made the playoffs in 2013, the shortstop had arguably the worst season of his career. You can live with his below-average defense at shortstop when he is hitting, but after seeing his offensive line sink to .242/.299/.402 -- only good for a 95 wRC+ -- Cabrera ended 2013 essentially as a replacement-level...

MLB Rumor: Indians interested in free agent Wilson Betemit

The Cleveland Indians are among teams showing interest in free agent third baseman Wilson Betemit, who played most recently with the Baltimore Orioles. Comcast Sportsnet Baltimore’s Rich Dubroff reports the Indians and Atlanta Braves are interested in the 32-year-old versatile infielder. All offseason, the Indians have been involved in a variety of rumors and news stories at the...

Trend Spotting: Quiet additions edition

Since the last time I opined in exacerbating detail the Indians have made three moves which will undoubtedly be impactful on the 2014 season. The three pertinent moves include the signing ofJohn Axford, Shaun Marcum’s entrance into the fold, and the trade of Drew Stubbs for Josh Outman. This is of course conceding that the Matt Treanor signing to a minor-league deal will...

Carlos Santana five games into third-base experiment for Indians

Catcher Carlos Santana is five games into his re-introduction to third base. So far, the move hasn’t hurt his bat, but his glove and arm are still getting re-acquainted to life at the hot corner. Santana is hitting .350 (7-for-20) with three errors for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Republic. Two of the errors came in one game – one on a throw, one on a ground ball...

Indians officially sign John Axford to a one-year deal

The Indians officially announced the signing of right-hander John Axford on Thursday to a one-year $4.5 million deal. The two sides agreed on the deal Monday, but Axford needed to pass a physical. Axford, 30, will be the Indians closer even though he spent much of last season as a set-up man after losing the closer’s job with Milwaukee in April. The 6-5 right-hander closed for...

IBI Digest: 12/15/13 - 11/21/13

The Indians were once again active on the Hot Stove market as they found their new closer in John Axford as well as signing veteran starter Shaun Marcum to a minor league deal and acquiring left-handed reliever Josh Outman from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for outfielder Drew Stubbs. The IBI staff breaks down the moves and how they can prove to be very productive for the...
