BALTIMORE---Adam Jones hit a tie-breaking homer to start the eighth, and Mark Reynolds and Chris Davis homered later in the inning as the Baltimore Orioles rallied for a 10-6 victory over the Yankees on Thursday night to pull into a first-place tie in the American League East.

The Jones homer off David Robertson (1-6) turned the game around. New York (77-60) had seemingly taken the momentum by tying the game at 6-6 with a five-run rally in the top of the eighth.

But Jones homered to left to start the eighth. Matt Wieters then singled, and Reynolds hit a two-run shot that just made it into the left-field seats - his second homer of the night - to give the Orioles (77-60) a 9-6 lead.

Davis then greeted Boone Logan with a solo homer on the first pitch to make it 10-6. That was Baltimore's sixth homer of the night, the most the Orioles have hit in a game since they also hit six in a game against the Rays on Aug. 28, 2007.

The Orioles also got homers from Wieters and Robert Andino that delighted a sellout crowd of 46,298.

The Orioles jumped in front with a big first inning against Yankees starter David Phelps. He retired lead-off hitter Nick Markakis before everything quickly fell apart.

J.J. Hardy and Nate McLouth got back-to-back singles, and they moved to second and third when Phelps balked with Jones up. Jones then lined a RBI single to center for a 1-0 Baltimore lead.

Wieters then sent the next pitch into the left-field seats for a three-run homer to put the Orioles up 4-0 after just five hitters.

New York didn't do anything until the third. The Yankees got three hits in that inning, but a double play helped keep them scoreless.

They finally got on the board in the fourth. Robinson Cano started the inning by lining a single off Jason Hammel's elbow and into left field for a hit. The Orioles trainers checked the right-hander for several minutes before letting him continue.

Cano moved to second on a ground-out and scored on Curtis Granderson's two-out single.

But the Orioles answered quickly. After Phelps got Davis and Manny Machado on fly balls to very deep center, Andino hit one that Granderson couldn't catch up to.

Andino's solo homer gave the Orioles a 5-1 lead. Reynolds added a solo shot in the sixth to make it 6-1 before the Yankees staged a big two-out rally in the eighth.

Alex Rodriguez (RBI double) and Granderson (RBI single) started things before Pedro Strop walked pinch-hitter Chris Dickerson with the bases loaded to make it 6-4. Ichiro Suzuki followed with a two-run single to right that tied the game.

Darren O'Day (7-1) came on to get Derek Jeter and end the inning, which set up the four-run bottom of the eighth. Jim Johnson closed it in the ninth.

NOTES: The Orioles officially reinstated Hammel to their roster before the game. Hammel's last start came on July 13 against the Tigers. He came out of that game after three innings as his right knee, which had been bothering him for a while, finally got to be too painful. Hammel went on the disabled list and had knee surgery. He had been out ever since...Reynolds has been a big force in the Baltimore offense thanks to his recent hot streak. He came into the game with six homers and 13 RBIs in his last six games. In fact, Reynolds hit four homers when the Orioles won two of three in New York last weekend. He then added his two in Thursday's game...The Yankees are in the second part of the tough 10-game, 11-day road trip. They'll play four in Baltimore and go to Boston after that to conclude their longest trip of this season...The Orioles honored Cal Ripken Jr. before the game on the 15th anniversary of the night he broke Lou Gehrig's record for consecutive games played, but when The Streak eventually ended on Sept. 20, 1998, the Yankees and Orioles were playing that night also. New York won, 5-4.
