First baseman Chris Davis struck out five times, grounded into a double play and then tossed two scoreless innings of relief after Baltimore ran out of pitchers, picking up the win as the Orioles beat Boston 9-6 Sunday in 17 innings. Adam Jones hit a three-run homer in the top of the 17th off Darnell McDonald, an outfielder the Red Sox put on the mound once their bullpen was empty. Boston got two men on to start the 17th against Davis (1-0), making his pro pitching debut. But he struck out All-Star slugger Adrian Gonzalez and got McDonald to ground into a double play 6 hours, 7 minutes after the game started. J.J. Hardy had five hits, including two homers, as Baltimore won its fifth in a row.

Video: Baltimore Orioles infielder Chris Davis pitches 2 scoreless innings; gets win in 17 inning game against Red Sox

Eighteen pitchers took the mound throwing a combined 570 pitches. Two of the men who toed the rubber aren’t pitchers [...]

Chris Davis Turns Terrible Day at Plate into Cy Young-Like Performance on Mound

Chris Davis had a lot of firsts on Sunday. Being mentioned in the same sentence as Cy Young had to be at the top of the list. Davis, who started the game as the designated hitter for the Orioles, ended up accomplishing something that no other player has done in more than a century. After going 0-for-8 at the plate during Baltimore's 17-inning 8-5 win in Boston on Sunday, Davis...

Davis pinch hits as Orioles pitcher, gets win in 17th inning

The Orioles bullpen has been a strength throughout 2012. Chris Davis wasn't supposed to be a factor. The Orioles first baseman picked up the win Sunday, striking out two on 23 pitches in two innings of relief in the 9-6, 17-inning win. Davis featured a split-finger fastball, which he used to strike out both Adrian Gonzalez and Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Davis, who said...

Allow MLB to Jump the Shark

Chris Davis Bringing High Heat Seriously, cast aside all pretenses and facades.  If the commissioner wants more interesting baseball near the end of the season, then he should be just as interested in compelling baseball at the beginning of the season.  Since Uncle Bud does not appear interested in returning my calls, I am left with no recourse but to write about my ideas...

DH Davis is winning pitcher in Orioles' 17-inning victory

BOSTON - That wasn't first baseman/DH Chris Davis who had ice packs on his right shoulder and elbow after Sunday's game. It was winning pitcher Chris Davis who had the ice on. Davis, who had a miserable day at the plate that almost got him into the record books for strikeouts, outpitched Red Sox outfielder Darnell McDonald to pick up the first win by an American League...

Chris Davis Outduels Darnell McDonald

And, yeah, that's the first time that two position players have squared off against each other since (believe it or not) Ty Cobb and George Sisler went toe-to-toe out of position on the last day of the 1925 season. The Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox ran out of pitchers- enter Davis who had gone 0-for-8 at the plate with five strike outs by the time the game was over. Davis...

Orioles 6, Red Sox 4(13)

Chris Davis drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the top of the 13th inning and the Baltimore Orioles outlasted the Boston Red Sox 6-4 on Friday night. Mark Reynolds, who hit his first homer of the season in the third, added a sacrifice fly in the 13th and Jim Johnson put Boston down in order to end the game after 4 hours and 37 minutes. Troy Patton (1-0) pitched two scoreless...

Orioles Bullpen is Amazing

The biggest surprise team of the 2012 MLB season thus far has been the Baltimore Orioles at 19-9.  They're getting timely hitting and decent starting pitching, but it's the bullpen that has been  the big story.  Their relief pitchers are so effective that a position player, Chris Davis, was forced to the mound today and worked 2 scoreless innings and picked up the win...

Sox Lose In Extras To Orioles 6-4

Chris Davis's RBI single off Franklin Morales in the top of the 13th inning scored Matt Wieters as the Orioles beat Boston 6-4 at Fenway Park. The Red Sox got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Cody Ross tripled and ended up scoring on a passed ball by Ronny Paulino. Baltimore got the run back in the top of the 3rd on a lead-off home run by Mark Reynolds off...

Position players pitching is cute...but...

Yes, we can all smile when a baseball game devolves into a seventeen inning contest and the managers have no choice but to pitch position players. Isn't it cute that Chris Davis and Darnell McDonald pitched? One did well and got the win. The other did not do well at all and earned a crash and burn loss. Yes, we all want to see the video highlights of this little side show. But...

What You Need to Know: Monday, May 7 by Daniel Rathman

The Weekend Takeaway Everyone loves a good dose of weird baseball, and that’s precisely what fans at Fenway Park were treated to on Sunday afternoon. The Orioles capped off their first sweep of the Red Sox in Boston since 1994, but that does not even begin to describe what transpired on Yawkey Way. In one of the most bizarre goat-to-hero stories you will ever see, designated...

Orioles Sweep Red Sox; The Unbelievable Keeps Happening...

The Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox, 9-6, in 17 innings. This game was the most bizarre I've ever witnessed. I can't even recap this. If there was a game that needed a combined team effort -- this was it. Well, it only took six-plus hours to decide a winner, but this game was so fun to watch on TV. Chris Davis tosses two scoreless innings and wins? Craziness. He...

Baltimore’s Hot Start and the Case of J.J. Hardy

The Orioles had the highlight of the weekend. No, not Chris Davis pitching, but this: [Not sure where this originated, but I discovered it via Ryan Hudson] The Orioles should be feeling really good. Prior to the season the usual trio of the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays were considered the contenders for the American League East, with the Blue Jays perhaps as the upcoming outsider...

Red Sox News & Notes - 5/7

Let's forget just for a moment that the Boston Red Sox were swept by the Baltimore Orioles at HOME over the weekend just for a few moments. Why's that? It's because how many times can you go to a MLB game and see two position players battling it out on the mound for their respective teams. Well that's exactly what happened yesterday afternoon/evening at Fenway...
