The Baltimore Orioles recalled pitcher Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk. Arrieta figures to serve as an option in long relief.
In order to make room for Arrieta the Orioles have demoted Kevin Gausman to Triple-A. Gausman had a 7.66 ERA in five starts for the team but allowed just two runs in his most recent start against Boston on Thursday night.
Arrieta was sent to Triple-A three weeks ago after he faltered in four starts for the Orioles this season. After 13 innings on Thursday the Orioles are in need of a fresh arm.
In 19 innings of work the 27-year-old right hander has 20 strike outs but also holds a 6.63 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP.
Expectations of Arrieta should be low. In his last two outings for Norfolk he allowed a total of 15 earned runs in 10 1/3 innings of work.
Wei-Yin Chen is expected to return to the Orioles soon and could do so at the expense of Arrieta.
