Found April 17, 2012 on Ted's Army:

8gwv5vpgjsq8fox4fjsl4p54fOne of the downsides of the Jacoby Ellsbury (other than the obvious losing-an-MVP-caliber-center-fielder piece of it) was that the Sox had to designate two young players for assignment. One was Michael Bowden, a once promising pitcher who flamed out as a below-average reliever in Boston. The other was Luis Exposito, a catcher some of us hoped would take the reigns from Jason Varitek. Exposito was jumped in the org chart by Ryan Lavarnway, and today officially left the club when he was claimed by Baltimore.

It's not likely Expo will come back to haunt the Red Sox -- he can't seem to keep his OPS over 700 in Pawtucket. His destination is a little surprising given the O's youthful catching tandem at the big-league level (Matt Wieters and Taylor Teagarden), but they had their own prospect bust to get rid of in Josh Bell, so perhaps they just needed some catching depth in the minors.

Bowden could be a different story, once he latches on elsewhere (the chances he slides through the ten-day waiver process like Scott Atchison are, in my mind, basically zero). Bowden was a first-round pick and has shown talent in the minors. High-caliber prospects like that tend to get a lot of second chances regardless of how pedestrian they look in the bigs (hi, Andrew Miller!). I wouldn't be surprised if Theo came calling on Bowden.

Mark Melancon sent down to Pawtucket, Junichi Tazawa called up

Red Sox reliever Mark Melancon was optioned to AAA Pawtucket today according to Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe. This demotion comes as no surprise when you look at how bad Melancon has looked this year. Most didn’t expect him to put up the numbers he had in Houston, but nobody expected him to give up runs and home runs at the rate that Melancon has done so far. Melancon is...

Sox send Mark Melancon to Pawtucket

As many speculated this morning, the Red Sox decided to option Mark Melancon to Pawtucket to work on his game in a less pressure-filled environment. The expected-to-be-solid setup man has an ERA just south of 50.00, so it's probably a good idea to take a look at what's going on. In his place comes Junichi Tazawa. Tazawa has been a promising pitcher for years now, but has...

Valentine questions veteran 3B Youkilis' commitment

Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine questioned the commitment of third baseman Kevin Youkilis during a television interview on Sunday. "I don't think he's as physically or emotionally into the game as he has been in the past for some reason," Valentine told WHDH-TV prior to Sunday's game versus the Tampa Bay Rays. "But (on Saturday) it seemed, you...

Kevin Youkilis Unloads First Homer, Points To Jeff Bagwell's Example Of Snapping Slumps

BOSTON –– Before the 6-3 loss, Bobby Valentine sensed progress. In the skipper's eyes, Kevin Youkilis was just one pitch, possibly one blooper away from returning to his All-Star form. Turns out, Valentine was wrong about the blooper. In the bottom of the second, Youkilis crushed Derek Holland's 93 mph sinker into the stands for his first round-tripper of the season,...

Kevin Youkilis Doesn't Expect Issues with Bobby Valentine to Linger, Hopes Team is 'One Big Happy Family'

BOSTON –– Kevin Youkilis wants to leave the past in the past. See what else Pedroia had to say in this edition of Red Sox Clubhouse Uncut.

Mike Napoli Nearing 'Chuck Norris' Legend Status With Another Stellar Night Against Red Sox (Video)

The Red Sox rallied in the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Texas Rangers managed to hold on for a 6-3 win over the Red Sox, led by another Mike Napoli home run. The Rangers catcher continues to eat Red Sox pitching up, blasting in five RBIs while growing his legend among Red Sox fans as one of those guys they hate seeing come up to bat. NESN Nation's Dan Duquette...

Ahoy! U.S.S. Youkilis Hits Iceberg Valentine?

DATELINE: HUMOR! As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic rapidly sinks into history, the Discovery Channel and History2 have more Titanic specials than you can find on a McDonald’s menu. Bobby Valentine is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fenway in the same vein. He has just acted like an iceberg and cut a hole into the soft underbelly of Kevin Youkilis. Valentine said that...

Vote: What Was the Biggest Positive Take Away from Red Sox Weekend Series?

The weekend's four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays may not have finished exactly how the Red Sox would have hoped, but there were certainly a number of positives to be excited about. While Boston wasn't able to lock down the series sweep over the weekend, taking three of four games from the division-rival Rays is a great feat. The successful series appears to have elevated...

Dugout Digest - the destruction of the Red Sox

One day after the critical Bobby Valentine comments about Kevin Youkilis (and the Red Sox losing to the Rays in a game many are blaming Valentine for), the Red Sox welcomed the Texas Rangers to town for a two game series. The first game didn't go exactly as Bostonians planned. Red Sox starter Jon Lester allowed seven runs (while only getting six outs), but things settled down...

Who Will Be This Week's Amica Pitcher of the Week?

The Red Sox have turned things around and it appears that the pitching staff is finally finding their groove. After taking three of four from the Tampa Bay Rays over the long weekend, the Red Sox have kicked things into high gear and are ready to welcome the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees to town. Jon Lester still looks like the ace of this Red Sox staff, tossing two gems in...

Rangers-Red Sox Preview

Despite nearly sweeping a four-game series to open their home schedule, the Boston Red Sox are dealing with another controversy during a tumultuous April. The Texas Rangers, on the other hand, just keep rolling - even on the road. The reigning AL champions try for their first 4-0 start away from home in 20 years Tuesday night, but they'll have to go through Red Sox ace Jon...
