The Orioles offense is terribly dependent on home runs. Never was that more apparent than Friday night when the Seattle Mariners seemed never to go away and the Orioles hit three important home runs. Each one was important—and symbolic. The offense was needed because Chris Tillman was uncharacteristically erratic in the Orioles 11-8 win over the Seattle Mariners before 25947 at Oriole Park. Chris Davis hit his 40th home run Nate McLouth had his first grand-slammer and Ryan Flaherty had one too. The Mariners had four home runs two off Tillman and two off Francisco Rodriguez in the eighth. Even though Tillman gave up six runs it was good enough for him to win his 14th game. The six runs equaled a season high. “Everyone knows what our offense is capable of and they put on a show tonight. They really picked this team up” Tillman said. Tillman (14-3) has won 10 of his last 11 decisions since May 19. The 14 wins are the most for an Orioles pitcher since Erik Bedard won 15 in 2006. In the first Aaron Harang who had pitched in 32 major league ballparks but never in Baltimore allowed four runs. McLouth led off with a single. Manny Machado and Nick Markakis walked to load the bases. All scored when Jones doubled to left. After Jones moved to third on an infield out he scored on Matt Wieters’ sacrifice fly. Seattle (50-59) cut the lead to 4-3 in the third. Michael Saunders hit a two-run home run his eighth and Kendrys Morales who had four hits drove in the third with a two-out single. Davis became the fifth Oriole to hit 40 home runs in the third. His drive landed on Eutaw Street an estimated 442 feet away the fourth time he’d launched one there and the longest of the four. He joined Brady Anderson Frank Robinson Jim Gentile and Rafael Palmeiro in the 40 club. All except Gentile are readily recognizable to fans by their first names.
