Willis leaves Triple-A Norfolk; Team stuck in an conundrum

When Dontrelle Willis by signed by the Orioles during Spring Training, it was an intriguing option. He was a pitcher who had past glory and could perhaps help the team as a left-handed reliever. However, there’s been a bump in the road. It looks like Willis, according to several reports has left Triple-A Norfolk. From the Baltimore Sun: Orioles minor league pitcher Dontrelle...

Report: Agent for Dontrelle Willis Says Orioles Are Holding Pitcher 'Hostage'

Dontrelle Willis wants the baseball world to know he didn’t abandon his team. If anything, he and his agent are now saying that team is holding him "hostage." A day after reports surfaced that Willis had abruptly left Baltimore's Triple-A team without permission, Willis and his agent have fired back at the Orioles for putting the pitcher on the restricted list. Willis...

Why Hall opted out of deal with Yankees

Super-utility man Bill Hall, who excelled with the Red Sox in 2010 before struggling with the Astros and Giants last season, would like to correct a misconception. Hall, a 10-year veteran, says teams assume that he will not play at Triple A because he elected free agency after failing to make the Yankees’ Opening Day roster. But, as Hall puts it, “That’s not the case....

Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1

Tommy Hunter allowed three hits over six innings, Matt Wieters homered off the glove of left fielder Eric Thames, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1 on Tuesday night. Hunter (2-1) allowed one run, walked three and struck out three. The only runner to get past first base against the right-hander was Thames, who hit a long home run in the third inning. Pedro...

On Michael Pineda, A.J. Burnett, Pedro Feliciano, and the media's double standard

I just want to, for once, admit that Squawker Jon was totally right on something. Specifically, he called the Michael Pineda injury issue correctly three weeks ago, comparing it to Phil Hughes' tendinitis, and mocking Joe Girardi for calling the diagnosis at the time "great news:"When reporters noted that Hughes was also diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis last year...

Orioles trade Josh Bell to the Diamondbacks

The Baltimore Orioles have traded third baseman Josh Bell to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange of a Player To Be Named Later or cash considerations according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun. Bell was designated for assignment last week after the Orioles claimed Luis Exposito off waivers from the Red Sox. Bell last played in the Majors in 2011 and hit .164/.215/.164 in 61...

Andy Pettitte, Michael Pineda, and the Latest on the Yanks Rotation

The setback to Michael Pineda this past weekend where he was shut down after only 15 pitches on Saturday, along with the recent struggles of the Yankees rotation, have turned the signing of Andy Pettitte from a “luxury item” to a thing of urgent necessity. So how concerned are the Yankees with Pineda’s latest setback? I spoke with a member of the Yankees organization on...

Sunday’s Yankees/Red Sox game rained out

Hope you didn’t have plans to watch tonight’s Yankees game, or worse, plans to head to Fenway Park as the game has been rained out. No make up date has been announced yet, but the Yankees are planning on just pushing their starters back a day. That means Japanese pitcher Hiroki Kuroda and Yu Darvish will face off on Tuesday against the Texas Rangers. Most Commented PostsDecember...

Dontrelle Walks

A strange little item from Jon Heyman. The Orioles gave no official reason Sunday for why he was placed on the restricted list, but Duquette to CBSSports.com confirmed Willis left the team without permission following a difference of opinion about whether he should start or reliever. "He just left,'' said Duquette when confronted with the information from other sources...

Roger Clemens Perjury Trial Begins as Jury Picked, Boundaries Set Up for Andy Pettitte Testimony

WASHINGTON -- The complexity of the Roger Clemens perjury retrial showed itself in many ways Monday -- before a jury that knows little about baseball. The prosecutor's hour-long opening statement was a rambling hodgepodge of dates and anecdotes that attempted to portray the seven-time Cy Young Award winner as a man who told lies and "other lies to cover up lies." A...

Weekly game thread: Apr. 23 – Apr. 29

The Yankees had a solid week last week splitting a four game series with the Twins and then taking two out of two against the Red Sox over the weekend before Sunday’s rainout. This week is about as tough as it gets as the Yankees face the Rangers and Tigers three times each. Mon: Yankees at Texas, 7:05 pm, MY9 and ESPN. LHP CC Sabathia (1-0, 5.48) vs. LHP Derek Holland (2-0...

Lincecum Gets First “W”

Unless he is battling injury or is aging out, to see a dominant pitcher lose velocity and all of a sudden become hittable from one season to the next is one of the most unexplainable things in sports.  Take New York Yankees’ starting pitcher Phil Hughes, for example.  The former top-pitching prospect went 18-8 in 2010 and was named to the American League All-Star team. Last...

Not-At-All-Rapid Reaction: Yankees Sweep Red Sox

Remember three days ago? The Red Sox were full of hope, preparing to honor their beloved ballpark, trying to use the parade of legends as a launching pad for their season. Instead, the Yankees turned Fenway Park into a launching pad of their own, thrusting their rivals into the throes of panic in the process. Just imagine how thorough this dismantling could have been had CC Sabathia...

Rain Out

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have been Postponed due to rain. No make up game has been scheduled yet. Sabathia was supposed to pitch tonight, but his start got pushed foward to tomorrow night in Texas against the Rangers. Podcast Episode 4: Goodbye Bahston, Howdy Big D

This episode was recorded before yeterday's finale between the Yankees and Red Sox was rained out, so it includes no discussion about the upcoming showdown between Hiroki Kuroda and Yu Darvish. I read somewhere that it will be the seventh time in MLB history that two Japanese pitchers will face each other in a game. Kuroda doesn't want to lose face, I'm sure, so he&...
