Roy Oswalt remains part of the Texas Rangers' pitching staff.

On Monday, a day after he said was through after 30 pitches in two perfect innings, the club said its position on Oswalt is the same. The team brass is aware he has a very strong desire to be a starter, even if that is somewhere other than Texas, but it has no plans right now to change his role.

Rangers officials said they have known very clearly since they first engaged in talks with Oswalt that he wants to start and that he had no interest in being a reliever. The club, assistant general manager Thad Levine said, gave Oswalt the implication that he would start, but that no long-term guarantees were made about his role. And while club officials said no ultimatum had been given the team, they have had "internal conversations" with Oswalt about his desires. That could include a trade.

"We always listen to requests from players," Levine said. "But right now, he's serving a very valuable role on our staff. We view that he is a productive member of our 12-man staff."

Oswalt, who began the season as a free agent and was only signed in late May, made six starts for the Rangers, during which he compiled a 6.49 ERA and a .357 opponents' batting average. When the Rangers acquired Ryan Dempster last week to fortify the staff, they opted to keep Scott Feldman in the rotation over Oswalt. At the time, Feldman had won his five most recent decisions, and he increased the streak to six on Saturday.

Oswalt was moved to the long-relief role in the bullpen. He's since put up four scoreless innings, picked up a win, struck out six and walked none.

"The expectation was that (starter) was the role he was going to serve with the team," Levine said. "But we are in the midst of a pennant race we haven't seen in the last two years."

Manager Ron Washington said he had no issues with Oswalt's announcement Sunday that he could not pitch a third inning of relief.

Oswalt didn't pitch Monday in the Rangers' 9-2 loss to the Red Sox at Boston.
