The Red Sox are apparently kicking a few tires around some of the used car lots as insurance at first base in case the Mike Napoli deal breaks down completely. WEEI has reported they have inquired into Casey Kotchman (pictured) and Lyle Overbay who are both free agents. Kotchman hit .229 with 12 HR and 55 RBI last season with Cleveland, he played 39 games in 2009 with the Sox. Overbay batted .259 along with 2 homers and 10 ribbies in 2012 while spending time with Arizona and Atlanta. Both of these guys are lefties which doesn't meet the need for the right handed power the team is currently looking for.The only other righty that has been mentioned as of late is Washington outfielder Michael Morse which would take a trade to pry him loose. Granted he had nice numbers the last two years with the Nats, but he would be a free agent after 2013 therefore it could make it risky to give up young talent for a year's rental. He's also a high strikeout guy (126 in 2012) and the Sox ...

Your Morning Dump... Where the Napoli picture is becoming clearer

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Earlier Friday, MLB Network Radio's Jim Bowden tweeted that the Red Sox want to reduce the original three-year, $39 million contract agreed upon on Dec. 3 to only one guaranteed year because of concerns...

Vote: Will Red Sox Complete Deal With Mike Napoli?

The Red Sox kicked off their busy offseason by signing Mike Napoli — or so we thought. More than a month has passed since reports surfaced stating that the Sox had agreed to a three-year deal with Napoli, but the veteran still hasn’t been formally introduced, and more recent reports have indicated that a hip issue is to blame. The Red Sox reportedly want to alter the terms of ...

Red Sox Rumors: Boston Interested in Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay

The Boston Red Sox have shown interest in free agent first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay, but “nothing is active” regarding the team’s pursuit of either player, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. According to multiple baseball sources, the Red Sox have shown interest in free agent first basemen Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay. One source reported...

Jackie Bradley Jr. Says He’s Ready to Take Advantage With Red Sox No Matter What Jacoby Ellsbury Does

The Red Sox have brought a stash of prospects to the Boston area to help the youngsters learn about the organization and the city. But Jackie Bradley Jr. sounds like he’s already so attuned with behaving like a big leaguer that he could teach a seminar or two. Bradley was diplomatic when asked Friday about where he fits in with the organization, especially with the questions surrounding...

Report: Red Sox Now Leaning Toward One-Year Deal With Mike Napoli

The Red Sox still have plenty of time to shore up their agreement with free agent Mike Napoli and get him officially signed to a contract, and it appears that some of the details are finally falling into place. The team reached an agreement with Napoli to be Boston’s new first baseman in early December, but the deal slowed down after Napoli came in for his physical. Now, with the...

Player Profile #156: Will Middlebrooks | 3B | BOS

There’s no doubt that Will Middlebrooks had a great 75-game debut in 2012, just ask Kevin Youkilis, but how much of it was luck? If you look at his 21.4% HR/FB mark you’ll realize he probably won’t hit home runs at the same pace in 2013. His .335 BABIP was a bit on the high side, but if you look at his .345 xBABIP you can make the case that he was a little unlucky in the batting...

Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs extend affiliation

On Friday night the Portland Sea Dogs announced an extension of their affiliation with the Boston Red Sox as the Double A minor league team. The original contract was set to end after the 2014 season but the extension through the 2018 season was announced during the Portland Sea Dogs Hot Stove Banquet. The Sea Dogs are entering their 20th season at Hadlock Field, their 11th as an...

Who's on First ?

Remember December 3rd ?, that was the day the Red Sox and Mike Napoli agreed to a 3 year deal for 39 million for him to come in and assume the void at first base. If my math is right that's 40 days and counting and no one has seen neither hide nor hair of him. He's been harder to spot around the baseball world than Waldo is in the classic "Where's Waldo ?" books...

Report: Red Sox Showing Interest in First Basemen Casey Kotchman, Lyle Overbay

With the Mike Napoli deal still up in the air, the Red Sox are reportedly looking at some fallback options at first base. The Red Sox have shown interest in Casey Kotchman and Lyle Overbay, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI. Both players are currently free agents. Kotchman was a member of the Indians last season, while Overbay split time between the Diamondbacks and Braves. Kotchman...

Red Sox Rumors: Boston Hoping to Shorten Mike Napoli Agreement

The Boston Red Sox reached a three-year agreement with free agent slugger Mike Napoli early in December, but the club would like to shorten the commitment to one-year in order to ensure the first baseman/catcher will be healthy enough to play for another two or three seasons, according to Jim Bowden of ESPN. Red Sox would like to shorten their deal with Napoli to one-year...

Catcher Conundrum

So, going into Spring Training 2013, the Red Sox have an abundance of catchers. I'll come right out with it, I'm a big Salty fan so anyone other than him as our main man next season and I'm going to be very disappointed. It was bad enough that I suffered the trauma of Tek retiring, to deal with the trade or demotion of a Saltalamacchia as well, this could be a challenge...

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. Report: Red Sox want to shorten Napoli's deal

Mike Napoli agreed to a three-year, $39 million contract with the Boston Red Sox back on Dec. 3, but Napoli and the team are currently discussing the possibility of shortening the length of the deal to one year because of concerns about Napoli's hip, ESPN.com reported. If the two sides agree to the amended contract, Napoli would get only one guaranteed year, according to...

Your Morning Dump...where there is some intrigue with Morse.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. I would trade Ryan Kalish, Franklin Morales, and two minor leaguers for Michael Morse to play first base. What do you think of the trade proposal? Art, Huntsville, Ala.He’s an interesting guy who does indeed...
