The Boston Red Sox’s ownership group rejected a report Thursday that the team could be on the market.

Fox Business Network cited sources who said the owners were “mulling a potential sale” of the franchise. The group also owns Liverpool FC of the English Premier League.

The report indicated that team executives are debating whether they have the capital to operate both clubs.

“A sale of any kind is so far from our thinking that it hasn’t even come up apart from the technical planning issues involving death or disability,” Fenway Sports Group chairman John Henry said in an email to SI.com. “This report is completely without foundation.”

Henry further added in comments to The Boston Globe, “The Sox and any of the other components of FSG are not for sale and will not be for the foreseeable future.”

Red Sox president and CEO Larry Lucchino also rejected the report and labeled it “nonsense.”

The ownership group purchased Liverpool for $476 million in 2010. Henry told Liverpool fans last week in a letter that he was keeping the team.
