The new Miami Marlins manager went on an awesome Ozzie rant today, like only Ozzie can, going on and on and on about Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter.
“My favorite player in the history of the game — nobody represents baseball better than that guy, Derek Jeter. Nobody. Not Mickey Mantle, Not Babe Ruth, Not Willie Mays” he said
“This guy is God, a baseball god. “
For all the insanity we associate Ozzie with, he does get it. He understands the history and impact players have had on the game of baseball. People argue that Jeter would have just been another player elsewhere, and while that may be true, he delivered in New York, and on he big stage. For all his gossip column exploits, it never devalued him as a player or teammate.
“That guy, too bad I don’t have a little 22-year-old girl. I would tell her to marry him. ‘Marry that guy. He’s got some s&%# going on.’ “He’s got everything. He’s single. Good-looking man, captain of the New York Yankees. A lot of rings, a lot of money. Not even an ingrown toe-nail! Everything is perfect.”
I wonder how much of this was meant to be heard by his own pair of superstars, third baseman Hanley Ramirez, who is maybe the most physically talented player in the game and a complete nightmare from the neck up, and newly acquired short stop Jose Reyes, who is also super talented but who lets his ego get in the way of that talent sometimes. Ozzie comes off as an emotional hothead quite often, but I believe much of what he says is calculated and used to motivate his charges. Love him or hate him, the guy can coach ‘em up. As far as having his daughter marry The Captain, he may want to review the blood test closely before signing off on that. H/T Fish Tank
