Carlos Quentin hit an RBI double in the 10th inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros on Monday night. Chase Headley walked with one out and stole second before Quentin drove him in with a drive to right-center against Brandon Lyon (0-2). San Diego grabbed a 7-6 lead on Jesus Guzman's two-run homer in the eighth inning but Jason Castro tied it with a solo shot in the bottom half. Dale Thayer (1-2) pitched a perfect ninth for the win and Huston Street finished for his 11th save. Brian Bixler and Carlos Lee homered in the first inning for Houston, but San Diego responded with four runs in the second. Nick Hundley hit a two-run double and Chris Denorfia had a two-out RBI single against Wandy Rodriguez that made it 4-2. Quentin, Guzman, Logan Forsythe and Hundley had two hits apiece for San Diego, which finished with 11 overall. Guzman also scored twice. Forsythe hit an RBI single to put the Padres up 5-3 in the third as both starting pitchers ...

New Owner Should Focus on Winning Padres Fans Back

With the sale of the Padres coming soon, it has forced me to think about how the new owner will be received.  Padres fans have had their share of bad owners and bad front office decisions, so I expect as many people to be skeptical as are optimistic when it comes to a new owner.  With that said, I offer you a crazy idea and one that may be unrealistic, but given what Padres fans...

Should the Padres consider a Chase Headley trade?

Jon Heyman of CBS is reporting that there is apparently a decent bit of interest in San Diego Padres third baseman Chase Headley. Headley currently has a .780 OPS for the last place Padres, and is just 28 years-old. He's only being paid $3.475 million this year, and is under team control for the next two seasons. Since he became a regular in 2009 for San Diego, Headley...

Daily Friar 6.25.12

The Padres lost and won yesterday. The loss came internally as a member of the Padres family passed away yesterday afternoon. Darrel Akerfelds passed away at the age of 50 after battling pancreatic cancer. Such a terrible disease for a great man to have to fight. His death didn't keep the Padres down though, they came out and put on a masterful pitching performance. In doing...

June Gloom

Now that I'm not in school anymore and I am a regular working guy, June doesn't hold the same appeal for me. When I was younger June represented the end of another school year and the beginning of a baseball-filled summer. Now I am an adult and don't get 12 weeks off in the summer but at least I still have baseball, right? Maybe not when your favorite team is the Padres...

Padres will listen to offers on Chase Headley

The San Diego Padres are in no position to contend this year and will probably become sellers at the trade deadline. One of their best players is Chase Headley and as Jon Heyman of CBSSports writes “while they head into the trade season with no intention to deal Headley, they will at least listen.” The price for Headley won't be cheap though. Heyman adds that a Padres official...

Daily Friar 6.27.12

The problem I've been having with the pitching staff this year, besides the fact that it's a revolving door, is that they have a hard time getting out of unnecessary jams. Case in point last night, Kip Wells throws the ball away during a possible double play chance. Instead of locking down and getting the next two outs like a good pitcher would, the Astros got the better...

Mariners vs. San Diego Padres: MLB baseball love ‘em & hate ‘em Game 3

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Jonathan Irwin reports on the third and final game of the interleague series versus the San Diego Padres. Even with strong pitching, the Mariners bats can't help them win games. The Mariners are now 31-43, seemingly already digging their proverbial grave. The top five hitters had just 2 hits—not including Kyle Seager's pinch hit...

Tigers Trade Candidates: Quentin, Victorino, Youkilis and more

The MLB non waiver trade deadline is a little over a month away (July 31st) the Tigers among many other teams will be looking to deal for that final stretch run of the year. Despite being three games under the .500 mark the Tigers are still very much contenders for the AL Central crown and should be buyers once July 31st rolls around. Pitching and second base will surely be the focal...
