Minor thoughts: Runs per game, by league
Over the past few months, we’ve talked a lot about San Diego Padres prospects. In fact, we’ve always spent a lot of time covering prospects here at Friar Forecast. There’s arguably no better time than right now, though, as the Padres have a consensus top five farm system and one of the deepest in baseball.
Scouting is obviously important in the minor leagues, especially at...
Padres Agree to Minor League Deal with P Micah Owings
The San Diego Padres added a starting pitcher to big league camp by signing Micah Owings to a minor league deal. Owings holds a 32-31 career record with a 4.91 ERA in 5 seasons with the Reds and D-Backs. Last season, he was 8-0 with a 3.57 ERAwith the D-Backs, starting 4 games for them. Jason Bartlett, Or Not
The rumor mill keeps mentioning Sox interest in Bartlett, but all reports seem to refer to this Jayson Stark column (emphasis mine): If the Red Sox decide this spring they don’t like their shortstop options, one guy who’s still out there is Jason Bartlett. The Padres have been listening on Bartlett all winter. But the Red Sox would have the same reservations that have kept other...
El Cajon Brewing Company: The Padres and Pints Rapid Fire Poll
At the El Cajon Brewing Company edition of Padres and Pints (Episode 2) Corey Brock of Padres.com was besieged by a set of carefully crafted questions. Now it's your turn . . .Originally we asked Corey the following: "You're on your way to Spring Training. Better music as you pass through Yuma: Band of Horses or Nickleback?"This was a cheap-shot at Nickleback because...
Daily Friar 2.1.12
Happy February to you all! There is a lot to look forward to this month when it comes to baseball. Pitchers and Catchers report very soon (18 days) which means spring training is about to start. Also on the 11th is FanFest, which will be a lot of fun for all the fans. I went last year and had a great time. I can only imagine that the crowd will be even bigger this year. Also as of...
Byrnes Executing the Plan
Newly appointed Padres GM Josh Byrnes has been a busy bee so far this winter. Since assuming the leadership mantle from his predecessor, Jed Hoyer, Byrnes has: Traded Mat Latos, the club’s best starting pitcher; added power-hitting corner OF Carlos Quentin; brought in veteran OF-1B and clubhouse leader Mark Kotsay as a free agent; upgraded at backup catcher with John Baker; replaced...

Daily Friar 1.31.12
Former Padre Chad Qualls signed with the Phillies this morning. He's their problem now. Let's not forget (or maybe we should) how well he pitched when the Padres were in Philadelphia. In case you need a reminder he gave up three homeruns to hand the Phils the game. A game that the Padres had in the bag. He had decent numbers at Petco, but his road numbers were just okay....
