The MLB offseason isn't normally known for being dangerous. Players enjoy their time away from the diamond by spending precious moments with their friends and families, vacationing, and just generally taking it easy. Some may also embark on a hunting trip or two. Such was the case for San Diego Padres pitcher Andrew Cashner recently. However, the trip turned for the worst after Cashner was unintentionally stabbed in the hand by a friend while trimming a carcass. Ouch. The blade of the knife cut through a tendon in the right-hander's thumb which forced the use of two stitches to sow the wound up. Padres general manager Josh Byrnes first learned of the injury on Tuesday and he says that it should take Cashner three months to recover. Although doctors don't expect any long-term consequences, they are doubtful that he will be ready by Opening Day.This news comes on the heels of a separate hunting accident that involved another member of MLB -- Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum. Sveum was accidentally shot in the ear after Hall of Fame third basemen Robin Yount had mistaken him for game.Perhaps MLB would be wise to offer a basic hunting safety course after the past week's incidents?Via UT San Diego.
